I'm trying to backup some DVDs of old black and white TV shows. In one scene there is a plane coming into an airport. As the camera follows the plane the sky shows up as multiple bands. The original source material doesn't show this banding effect.
I've been trying just about everything I can and I can't seem to get rid of the banding. I've tried turning on many options in XVID, turning off B frames, changing the target quantizer to 1.0 and the banding remains. I also turned off every filter I was using without any change in the encoded result.
So I'm left wondering if there is any way to avoid the banding while encoding this scene. Is there an option in XVID that might help, or perhaps someone knows a filter that might help with the banding. The original souce has some slight noise and a few spots/scratches (the sort that seems normal for old video.)
