View Full Version : no audio using TMPGenc

i converted a dvd to an .avi using AutoGK. Gspot confirms the .avi uses xvid for video and mp3 (vbr) for audio

i now want to create an svcd from this file so i can view on my standalone player. using TMPGenc to convert the .avi to .mpg i get no audio at all. ive tried with an xvid/ac3 .avi but again no audio

are there certain audio formats which TMPGenc cannot handle, or should i use another program to convert that .avi to .mpg?

thanks for any advise,
stef

Some Audiofiles You need a DeCoder. AC3 will only work with a plugin.

The Best thing You can do is using BeSweet and encode Your Audiofile seperatly. Mux it with TMPGEnc or Muxman to a MPG-File

thanks for your reply

what about the .avi with mp3 as audio? normally that should work in TMPGenc, no?

TMPGEnc can't really handle AC3 and MP3 VBR-Streams. I would rather encode the audiostream seperately with e.g. BeSweet.

Look in TMPGEnc under OPTIONS, ENVIRONMENTAL, VFAPI PLUG-IN and de-select all the plug-ins that are checked. Re-check the two AVI reader options and the direct show option. Right click on the direct show option and raise it's priority to higher than the others (it should appear at the top of the list). You should be able to convert your mp3 audio now.
TMPGEnc should work faster as well!
If this still fails, look for a program that came in the older avi2dvd package called decompressor.exe, it decompresses audio to pcm audio, which TMPGEnc can do just fine.

TMPGEnc can also handle with MP3s in VBR if you use an external encoder in the envirolment seetings like toolame or other.

This DirectShow Sourde method isn't very good because of quality reasons.

so am i correct in saying TMPGenc can only handle PCM audio without external resources?

what about MP3 in CBR as audio? id rather not use external plugins or programs but will if there is not other option

MP3 CBR and other codecs (if installed in the system) should be no problem - but I'd rather always use an external encoder like e.g. BeSweet to encode the audio stream seperately.

thanks for all replies!

well besweet is def a good program, ill use that

please fill in the blanks. this should be all correct.

1. the video and audio will be extracted from my .avi using: ???. this is called demuxing
2. i will then convert the audio file from ??? format to ??? format, using besweet
3. i will then use TMPGenc to create a new mpg from the audio and video streams that were extracted and created in steps 1 & 2

muchos gracias

3.
No, not from the audio stream ! This would be a useless double compression.

I'd do it this way:

- demuxing the audio stream from the source File e.g. using VirtualDub or AVIMuxGui

- converting the audio stream with e.g. BeSweet

- encoding only the video stream of the AVI-File with TMPGenc (producing an Elementary Stream)

The last step depends on what you want to do with the audio- & videostream. You can either mux audio and video in an mpeg-file (with the "MPEG-Tools" of TMPGEnc) or leave the streams elementary (two files) for DVD-authoring.

thanks, im getting there!

when i demux the audiostream with virtualdub, what will the resulting file format be?

and what format do i convert it TO with Besweet?

take it easy

If you are converting an AVI to SVCD all you need to do in run TMPGEnc and make sure you set up TMPGEnc like I mentioned in an earlier posting. I did one last night with XviD and AC3 audio and it make a VCD for me just fine.

What you DO need to be able to do is be able to play the AVI on your PC, with both audio and video, with a standard media player (E.G. Media Player Classic plays damn near everything but it's codecs are BUILT IN). If you cannot, you might need to install "AC3 Filter 0.70b" or newer on your PC to play AC3 sound.

If you can do that, TMPGEnc will work fine all on it's own, with no demuxing or remuxing or tinkering with audio.

If quality is an issue, make your SVCD from the DVD source.

Sorry, but this won't work. ;) VBR MP3 is not an issue of the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader, it seems to be an issue of TMPGEnc itself.

Increasing the priority of the DS-Reader can solve a lot of problems - e.g. if TMPGEnc cannot open some video streams, because it's just looking for installed VfW-Codecs and a DirectShow filter would be needed to decode it.

But that's unfortunately not not a way to solve the VBR MP3 Problem - I just tried to encode a DivX-Stream with an MP3 VBR Audio Stream (with increased DS-Reader priority)- it remains muted.

when i demux the audiostream with virtualdub, what will the resulting file format be?

Sorry, I should have written this earlier: I'm not quite sure what VirtualDub does with "Save WAV"; AFAIK it demuxes the Audiostream with a WAV-Header.
So I'd prefer VirtualDubMod "Stream List" ==> "Demux" or AVIMuxGUI.

The resulting format is the same as in the AVI-File - it's just demuxed, nothing changes. So if there is an MP3 VBR stream in the AVI, you'll get a file with an MP3 VBR stream.

and what format do i convert it TO with Besweet?

Depends on what you're gonna do with it...
If you want to create a SVCD use MP2 (that's what TMPGEnc would create), if you want a DVD use MP2 or AC3...

illCP thanks this worked! :goodpost:

however, the resulting .mpeg was twice the size of the original .avi: 1,4GB. the video quality was quite crap

when trying to burn a SVCD with Nero it told me the .mpeg is not SVCD compliant. i adjusted the settings in TMPGenc: 480 x 480 at 29.97fps for video and audio at 44.1Khz in MPEG stereo

then i upped the priority of my Cyberlink MPEG2 decoder in the VFAPI plugin menu of TMPGenc

3:14hrs of encoding to go. will post the results here.

thanks again :)

Stef,

The priority values are for reading only, if you are ENCODING an mpeg2 file (SVCD or DVD), you do not need to change those. The priority should go to the one that matches your SOURCE file.

If you are encoding from DVD or M2V source material, there is also a third party plug-in (free) that is better than the one built into TMPGEnc, look in this forum for the link for it (my post, search for Paulcat)

Also, you can stop the encoding at any time to check and see if it working.

ADDITIONALLY, the AC3 video cd I did had no sound, my player was picking up the AC3 file in the same directory. I downloaded besweet and belight and converted the ac3 to mp2 audio and remuxed. Although, I KNOW I have been able to do it before, maybe with an older ac3 codec...
