Xvid encoding question

I've been using AutoGK to try to encode episodes of TV shows, but I haven't been able to get the quality nearly as good as my DVD originals.

I'm playing them back on a Philips DVP642, with going to the system menu and out again in order to make it appear normal which came about with Xvid 1.0. (Wish Philips would hurry up with a patch...)

Are there any recommended settings for the Xvid encoder's highest quality that I could use? I don't care if it takes a day to encode just one episode, I'm simply trying for the best picture I can get.

I tried the settings from pages 2 and 3 of http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=267 but I'm still getting a very poor picture. Lots of visual blockiness, poor picture on fast action shots such as swordfights, etc.

Any help that can be offered will be greatly appreciated...

How to get the highest quality from XviD? Guess what, quality is subjective and it depends on the source type, length of the material, compressibility of the material etc etc ;).

If there was a one-size-fits-all answer, then that would have been a sticky here already and we could have avoided all the hundreds of threads on the same topic so far. Not to sound rude, but please do some searching. There must be atleast ten topics started here for every option in the XviD Encoder dialog. Please ask if you have any specific issues and avoid asking such general questions.
