I'm searching for a solution. my encodings are very low-bitrate (1500-2000) at PAL-DVD-resolution. so i need a good vbr. but what to take. multipass or 1-pass cq. somewhere i herad, the cq brings better quality (because of quality) but raises the filesizes. or are there any other differences?

With TMPGEnc CQ mode is the best, with motion estimation High Quality (Slow), you can choise. But you have to predict the value with the CQMatic from www.kvcd.net or with the CQ Tester from: www.boraxsoft.de Theres also an tut.

With CCE the best is also Q VBR.

tmpgenc, realy? in my opinion, when i was encoding a file in tmpgenc cq-mode the picture got very blocky as motion was preset. but only motion-parts!

but what's the difference between 2-pass (multi) and cq-mode exactly? I have to test right now! ;-) again ...

CQ (Constant Quality) is the best choise for TMPGEnc, realy. CQ uses a quality you set and give this possible quality to a frame. 2-pass only has the target on file size and at the same bitrate CQ is better then 2-pass and also with prediction faster.

and you mean tmpgenc is the best? which? xpress, plus or free? there are differences between, isn't it?

what about cce, hc a.s.o.
or does tmpgenc the best job in your eyes?

I've find out that canopus' engine is very worse in constant quality mode. very very much blocks! tmpgenc is even better. so much for ...

Don't use TMPGEnc XPress because you can't use such tools for predictions like CQTester and CQMatic. So you shoud use the Plus or Free version. The free version only limitates the MPEG-2 encoding and only offer a worse 2-pass mode. In CQ it's the same quality.

At low bitrates TMPGEnc is very good (MPEG-1) but HC is also very good. But I want to wait for the next version because there should be a quality update and then I want to compare the quality with TMPGEnc. CCE is only good for encodes over 2000Kbps but I don't use it because of the prize and in my eyes quality.
