Encoding Help

Love the XviD codec but am having trouble finding a more recent Encoder that looks as good as FlaskMPEG 0.594. It is an old program but it creates a great view on single pass. I have tried all the newer programs of Flask and Xmpeg and the video looks choppier than with the Flask .594. I tried to see if there was a setting different because I use standard settings but nothing seems to work.

I like to rip TV shows on DVD and convert them over to MPEG4 because my DVD Player on my home theater plays perfectly both Divx and Xvid codec. I love Xvid because I can burn and fit 30 episodes of Star Trek Voyager on one DVD. It is just a little time consuming because that old version of Flask doesn't allow any saves so it must be manually set up the same way each time.

Any suggestions?

You should take a look at www.doom9.org. It's not too far away, you are using its forum :p

No seriously: There are many tools around which are more up-to-date than flask. Just try VirtualDub for starters.

I do use VirtualDub but only for cutting the AVI. As far as I can tell, you can't use VirtualDub to Endode directly from Ripped DVDs. I wish you could as it would make my job a lot easier and cut some time off it as well.

I have looked at the guides and will try to follow some of them.

I just can't figure out why I can't get the newer programs to look as good as that old one I use. Very stange. This old program takes a bit more time but shows better results.

No, you can't open a VOB with VirtualDub (OK, VirtualDub won't even open a VOB, atleast VirtualDubMod will open it) and start saving it as an AVI (OK, you can if you just want to process individual VOBs). There are few things in between like creating an AVS file and feeding it to VirtualDub etc. But, seriously, did you look at the guide here (http://www.doom9.org./index.html?/xvid.htm) properly? It can't get simpler than that.

Another easier way to do your encodes is to use a one-click app like 'AutoGK' (search this forum for that keyword). It internally will use VirtualDubMod (can't escape that), but atleast it will avoid you having to manually interfere. You can use it as a 'click it, forget it' tool and the VirtualDub(Mod) it uses is better than FlaskMPEG since you can do a 2-pass encoding with it.
