View Full Version : Anime-- Transcoders or Encoders??

I read a post a while back (on another forum) where a user claimed that transcoders handled anime better than encoders. I wish I remembered where I read it, so I could post a link. Basically said that you really have to know what you're doing to get good results with DVDRB & CCE.

I have been using DVDRB & CCE 2.50 (with anime) for a while now and I can't say I've noticed anything really bad. But I'm one of those who struggle to see differences.(don't know why) I do want to use as good a method as possible, because one day I might be using these backups with a larger plasma tv, and I don't want to all of a sudden find that my backups suck.:)

I use DVDRB Pro (subscriber) & CCE 2.50. I never change any settings. I use the following settings: VBR Bias=25, Quality Prec=16, & VBR Passes= 3 (sometimes 6). Also.. I use DVDShrink for low compression backups.

Anyone have any advice on using Transcoders or Encoders for anime? Any reason NOT to use DVDRebuilder for anime?

For animation I simply set DVD Shrink on max smoothness and run that regardless of the amount of compression. I just don't think transcoders harm animation the way they harm live action.

Really? If that's the case, then I would save a lot of time by using Shrink. I take it that you have found "Max Smoothness" to work the best with animation. When I have used Shrink for anime, that is the setting I used.

Anyone else only use Shrink for anime?

Transcoders can harm animation also, by which amount and how different I don't know, but they do.

If you choose appropriate settings for your encoder, you can expect a good balanced quality backup. With a transcoder it doesn't work quite this way.

One last note, there's really no point doing more than 2-3 passes.

Thanks to other posts I've read, I'm now using 3 total passes.

Just now comparing a backup that was about 60%, and the 3 Pass CCE build looks better than the backup from Shrink. You have to look pretty hard tho. But again... my eyes aren't the best for judging this stuff.

I re-encode as I prefer to de-interlace animation to get rid of the dread combing effects. Done properly you can really clean animation up

RaistlinMajere, can you expand on that? Sorry, but I don't know what you mean. But I'd be interested in knowing what you do. When I run a movie thru DVDRB, does it automatically de-interlace? Do you do this (de-interlace) with new titles also? (ie. Ghost in the shell, Hellsing, etc..)
