View Full Version : Reauthoring (DVDAuthorGUI), losing sync in demultiplexed files

I'm trying to reauthor a DVD of 4 television episodes. My source is a DVD5 with all the eps in a single VTS and no menu (which is why I'm reauthoring ... I want a menu). I'm using DVDAuthorGUI.

So DVDAuthor doesn't do so well importing VOBs, so I need to demultiplex. I used DGIndex for this, which reported NO audio delay (DVD Decrypter, BTW, also reported no audio delay).

I ran my demultiplexed m2v through ReStream to remove sequence end codes, since DVDAuthor doesn't seem to like them. I also used Chapter Xtractor to get back my chapter points and added them in (they seem to be just right).

And I made a menu. Basically everything seems just great except that the first episode on the DVD is in sync, but then starting with the second episode the audio is slightly but noticeably out of sync.

I'd like to understand how this happens, if anyone has any idea. I always assumed audio and video were linearly synced from a given starting point all the way through, if that makes sense. What is it within a VOB that keeps things synced, but then seems to lose sync when demultiplexed (assuming there is no delay).

And yeah, I know I could use DVDShrink to reauthor the episodes into separate titlesets, and in fact I've done that before and they do stay in perfect sync. So that's what I mean: what is Shrink doing to keep them in sync? There must be some answer :)

Thanks,

This guide explains how to author the menu in dvdauthorgui , and as it requires at least 1 title m2v to be included , I would include a first play title .

This could simply be a flashy logo with ac3 audio , just to get it to compile the menu , and you can blank it out in pgcedit later , and disconnect it from the structure of the dvd , ie , remove the commands connected to it .

As for episodal type dvds , what I do is simply use pgcedit to open the authored dvd folder , then import vst titles (the 4 episodes) , always copy to the same folder , then its hook up the buttons , and edit a few basic pre and post commands to make it work .

These are included in the guide as well .

As for audio problem , I always encode to ac3 anyway just to make life simpler .

I use Ifoedit to play test all dvd's created to check for navigational error's and video playback problems , such as wrong audio stream , or messed up subtitle choice .

This second guide

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=269499

Explains a basic approach to demultiplexing mpegs using batch demux , as I know a number of de-multiplexing tools are no where up to scratch , and have audio problems .

If you follow these 2 guides , you should not run into any problems , as I have made many dvds this way , and burned them using imagetools , but of course , on tdk dvd-r media as its never given me any trouble .

Tested on 20+ dvd home players ranging from 5 years old to new , only one had an issue , due to the new dye being used .

This unit required a power calibration to keep the laser cool .

More guides soon ....Bjs is me
