Why do most free software doesnt have a version for Linux?

E.G. Virtual Dub....

We know that games and video editing are the weakness of Linux,

Shall we be forever enchained to m$??????????????????? :(

Because almost always, the codebase won't be compatible across platforms and considerable changes would have to be made before they are truly portable. Implementation in Linux and Windows are very different.

Reg: your example of VirtualDub, these (http://www.virtualdub.org/blog/pivot/entry.php?id=39) are Avery Lee's issues and obstacles in porting the codebase to Linux. One can easily empathize with him.

If your aim is to rip & transode DVDs, have a look here (http://www.bunkus.org/dvdripping4linux/single/index.html).

P.S: I think you need to have a better title for your thread. 'One Important Question(VERY important)' seems to be designed for needless attention grabbing.

The question is of basic importance, *seems* that the opens/free community is working for billy...

Why didnt all started from Linux and THEN discussing the obstacles in porting the codebase to Windoze :confused:

And why should they? For YOUR convenience? So actually you want other people to spend more of their free time in something so you have to spend less money/time.

That's backwards.

If you don't want windows anymore, learn to code and port VirtualDub to Linux. And goodluck.

(For me this isnt even so much about an OS war: just some person who's being ungrateful again for free tools and thinks he's in the position to tell developers what to do.)

Not interested in that sort of discussion. I couldn't care less if people use Windows, Linux or a Mac. But if you wanna be 1337 then don't complain afterwards that your OS hasn't got the tools you actually need.

I am not sure in how valid your statements are in the light of transcode and MPlayer usage of today. I dont think the IRC channel of MPlayer can complain about a lack of users, both Windows + Linux like.

All the necessary tools to get the job done already exist and are free for you to use, and mostly free to modify too (depending on the license, but since most are GPL or BSD-like, LGPL there shouldnt be a problem if you want to spend time improving aspects here and there).

I'd call some tools even more mighty than the windows-ones. Especially mplayer/mencoder, transcode,... They all force you to not just think in point-and-click. Anyhow there are even some GUIs existing for those programs.

Complaining about the lack of "ported windows software" is like complaining that you DIY-car isn't as comfortable as a mrecedes. Think about it "you get what you paid for".

(And I like to pay nothing for an OS. Well, the OS itself. I already paid in my education, which isn't necessary in windows. So that argument counts.)

Anyhow, this is just a trolling-trial, it's an OS-war. We don't need that, everybody with a little knowledge and sanity and reason just uses what he/she needs.

I vote for closing this thread as it leads to nothing like _every_ OS-war-related thread does.
