Which matrix... it depends on what material you using, movie/film or TV series, cartoon/anime, high bitrate/low bitrate, progressive/interlaced......I find "Kika Cimic High" works well for cartoon/anime and extremely high bitrates very similar to "Smooth (CG)".... most of the time the default matrix for both HC and QuEnc work well, for mid to mid/low bitrates (4000k to 3000k) you might try "QLB" by dragongodz or "BACH1" by DDogg.... But now we are getting a little OT

I am using The DVD-RB version (HC14 batch)to back-up main movies from my DVD collection. The goal is to get the best quality on a single DVD-R to avoid using and scratching my original DVDs.

I guess the average bitrate is 4 to 6 mb/s. I just find the default matrix generates alot of blockiness in shadows. Tried "Kika Comic High" and had better results in shadows even if it was originaly designed for CG, not real film.

Any ideas where to find additinal matrix to use and info about them?

I have tried just for one encode Sharktooth's eqm_v3lr with HC 0.14 and I was stunned by the results ;).
Main movie bitrate around 3000 Kbps and a little lower for extras, both have been encoded with great quality.

Hi. I'm relatively new to the DVD-RB scene after using DVD Shrink. I'm currently using the freeware version and I learned to use HC encoder with the freeware version via a couple of posts from Fishman0919. I have a few questions now related to this post.

Is there a way to guess the "best" matrix for certain types of movies? For instance, do CG movies such as The Incredibles use a different matrix as opposed to anime such as Spirited Away? Are sci-fi such as Star Wars any different than other movies with some CG integration such as Lord of the Rings? What about movies that have relatively low action scenes such as Finding Neverland vs action flicks without CG such as The Fugitive? Or does one have to run a few scenes first to get an idea of which matrix to use? Or does one simply choose one decent "all-in-one" matrix?

If you use a custom matrix, how does one incorporate it into the HC.ini file? The PDF file on HC suggests that there are only a few native supported matrices. Matrices such as Kika Cimic High and Sharktooth's eqm_v3lr are not mentioned in the PDF file. Further, Sharktooth's matrices are in .xcm files which I have no idea how to utilize with DVD-RB and HC. (I figure that the DVD-RB Pro version may have an easier way for custom matrices, but I'm still tinkering with this and wish to know how to use custom matrices with the freeware version)

Does Sharktooth's matrices work with DVD-RB and HC since I found the matrices .xcm files on the XVID forum?

I searched this forum and Google'd Kika Comic High and couldn't find the matrix. Where does one find this matrix?

There isn't an all-in-one matrix because of the differences of the movies. I can only tell you my oppinion and my experiences. At relativly high bitrate and movies with low motions and very dark scenes the KVCD notch matrix is for me the best choise because it doesn't cut so much detail and compresses the material very good and there are less block as the standart matrix. At very high bitrate you should use the default matrix because this doesn't cut details so much. But use this only with bitrates over 5000Kbps. For very high action scenes and/or low bitrate I can only preffer the MVCD 2.5er matrix. This is in the most cases the best choise for me. But I think you have to test matrixes detailed by your own to make your own choise.

That is an interest point you just made. I have burned a movie with HC and QLB matrix. The disc plays on my computer, but not on my DVD player. Is that because of the QLB matrix? Further, do I manually input the custom matrices in the HC.ini file and if so, how does one do that? May I have an example of and HC.ini file that utilizes a non-native custom matrix? Thanks.

There are also the MDVDex templates which uses another MDVDex matrix with more compression for the high res dvd templates. The quality is very good for very low bitrates.

I don't think. I don't here anywhere that the matrix make imcompatibel files. That's new for me. But I think it's false because this is no DVD spezification.
