How do I edit out swearing from movies?

I know that I can edit out scenes with DVD Shrink, but I would like to edit out the swearing in Goonies. Is there any way do dub over it or just "bleep" it out? Thanks, dleigh

OK, I'll take a shot at this but I haven't done it before since I haven't the need to do it. You can demux and convert your audio files off your Title VOBs to WAV files with DVD2AVI.

Then you can edit this WAV file with a wave editor. You don't want to do any removing, just selectively mute certain parts. Save the edited WAV. Convert WAV file back to ac3 using BeSweet or BeLight. Remux new AC3 with Muxman. Replace old VOBs with new VOBs.

Well, this is my theory of process. It should loigcally work. Nobody said it was going to be easy. Though I wish we had an audio blanker that would work directly with the VOBs like we do with video blanking programs.

You mean like with language choices of audio there could also be -English (no-swearing), just as a simple choice,? I guess basically it would be exactly the same as the other English version but with an alternative version of the words dubbed over. That sounds easy to implement.

We just watched "Shall We Dance" with Richard Geer and Jay-Lo. A really nice "feel-good" family movie, with the one "F" word located towards the end of the movie. Enough to spoil it for the "family viewing".

The answer is pretty simple...Demux to video and audio. Take the audio through Goldwave and mute (not cut) the offending part. Save the wav file then convert back to AC3 (as per 2cool's advice above). Then reauthor the DVD with something like TMPEnc DVD Author or DVDLab. I've done this to several movies. Titanic is another movie with the one F word, and another that comes to mind is Enigma, which has only about 3 bad words....

It would probably be better to try and find a way to cut out the offending frame since you're essentially duplicating a very lossy compression process which is very bad.

Just cut right before the curse word, right after the curseword, and append in the middle some silence. This will ensure a much higher quality in the end.

I have never used Muxman before. I was able to get the edited WAV file to AC3 with BeLight and I was able to get it loaded into Muxman, but I can't get the origional VOB files loaded. They are not "useable video files". Do I need to convert these files? Or am I doing this wrong?

I have heard that there are some websites that offer the sanitized version DVD of popular movies.

It really is a shame that I can't watch certain movies till late at night so as not to expose my children to the vulgar blather.

I am no puritan but one should have a choice in these matters.
To have to put one F... word in a movie for no artistic reason is absurd.:(

hmm. i'm of the opinion that the kiddies have probably learnt these words before they can operate a DVD player. for sure, "f..." was one of my brother's first words (it makes sense - it's a monosyllable and it's an easy sound to make for a young child. that and my dad had just got a new Apple II that wasn't working well for him). but doom9 isn't the place for digressions of this nature...

perhaps we need to make a guide for this, because it gets asked sort of often.

one thing i'd do is try not to re-encode all the audio - this will degrade quality unacceptably. if possible (i don't know muxman too well) cut out the bits that have the swearing, decode it to 6 waves, and only change the dialog channel. this will be as close to seamless as you can manage. the tricky part is getting it back into the stream without little clicks around the edit edges.

i think it'd actually be easier to pixel out nudity than to edit the audio without re-encoding. mpeg-2 is relatively easy to edit.

I think you're looking at this from the wrong angle. Instead of recompressing a movie, surely a better idea is to have the player take care of the audio blanking? You'd need a template for each film/encode but the files would be tiny (like text subs) and people could share them. Would make a nice open-source project for someone :)

Not that I agree with censoring someone elses work, but I know there's more to it than that.

This has been discussed several times, but the easiest thing to do is get the ClearPlay DVD player (http://www.clearplay.com/). It works as well as anything you're likely to hack together on your own, but you don't have to do all the work yourself and you can choose what you want filtered out. Alternately you can watch movies unfiltered.

That actually doesn't look like that bad of a solution. The subscription idea is pretty good, that way your filters stay up to date as movies are released.

Much better than those solutions that mute/skip based on CC content.

It wouldn't have to be a separate soundtrack. DVDs can have alternative branches to individual scenes. That can include clean dialoge as well as alternative video content... not that I mind too much spending hours with Microsoft Paint, carefully, frame by frame, painting decent attire over hot, nude babes. Usually, I don't like the results and have to start over. :D

Sometimes movies and TV shows are shot with alternative scenes as they're produced. For example, they made the R-version of Sex in the City for HBO with alternative scenes for a PG-13 version for other channels. So, an actress might say something like "**** me hard" and then say the line again "hold me tight." (Of course, this "less filthy" version isn't for children, just for channels that don't want to show R-rated content.)
