Converting XVID to DiVX

I have several XVID encoded files that are not compatible with my Philips DVP642 player.

What is the most straight forward method of converting these files for compatability without sacrificing quality or skewing the audio?

The player will actually open the file and begin playback but the picture is completely unintelligble, flashing randon colors that cover the screen. You can barely discern there is content behind it, but it's not viewable at all.

Sounds like the infamous firmware bug. Try pressing the 'System Menu' button on your remote twice, when this happens.

Can you list the "propertiies" of one of your problem files please?

We need to know if problem files contain any ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) and the correct resolution!

Reolution: 602x256. File size/length: 700mb at 98 minutes, 19 seconds, 141423 frames. FourCC=XVID. Decompressor: DiVX 5.2.1. Key frames: 1946. Min/avg/max/total key frame size: 1853/19158/47733. Min/avg/max/total detal frame size: 9/4253/59591. Data rate: 855kbps.

Since audio is fine, I won't post that information here.

Any more information you need, please ask and tell me what tool to use to garner the information.

Well, unskinny boy was absolutely right and with this simple yet inane solution, the files display just fine.

I can certainly live with this quirk. However it would be extremely helpful to understand WHY this 'fix' is effective.

Well, I have no idea why it happens, but you can attempt updating your firmware. It involves basically getting the new firmware (if any) putting it on a cd(rw) and loading it, its easy.

However, to figure out what type of player you have do the following:
1.) turn your player on, and hit the 'open/close' button to open your tray
2.) from there press the following keys: 5 6 9 "ok"
It will display your version (ex: 0531) model (ex: 642/37), write that info down, and go here:

-Do a search for your model (hopefully it isnt 642/37 as there is no updates) and look for any firmware updates. Read the documentation on how to do it before you give it a go obviously.

Hopefully this helps. And hopefully your not stuck with a model that has no updates.

oH yeah, relating to the player, you can make it region free very easily.
- Open Tray
- Press 7 8 9 OK
- Press 0

and you should see a "0" appear
-close tray.

I notice the XviD stream contains B-VOP. If you feed the stream into GSpot beta (http://gspot.headbands.com/gspot252dl.html), you will be able to check the files MetaData/UserData codes. You should have two UserData codes. One XviD, the other DivX.... like this: -

As far as I'm aware, the Philips DVP6xx range of players prefer encodes generated with "packed bit-stream", which GSpot will also be able to identify!

If the encode does not contain "packed bit-stream" you could use a tool called MPEG Modifier to correct this!

SeeMoreDigital, how do you change your non-packed bitstream to packed with the mpeg4modifier? I dont see this option. I'm tryin it w/v1.3.2, in fact I don't see an option to do it period (as in it being there but not selectable doesnt happen either)

EDIT: Nevermind, I just found out that "openDML' is not supported, and Gspot indicates thats the container.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just found out that "openDML' is not supported, and Gspot indicates thats the container.You are correct MPEG4 Modifier can't add packed bit-stream... but some stand-alone players may benifit from having DivX's UserData code (with a "p" at the end), rather than not have it at all.
