xvid encoder ONLY!! *read why*

After reading this (http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1291964#1291964) thread, I found out that the XviD video codec pack was causing xvid and divx files to not work in vegas. Now that I uninstalled it they work fine in Vegas. My computer plays xvid files fine without it, but I still want to encode in Xvid format. Any suggestions?

Well the only thing I can think of is to do your work in Vegas, Export it to fully uncompressed frames....like 16GB per 25 mins of video I hope you have the space. and then use avisynth and virtualdubmod to encode the uncompressed version.

I read the thread you pointed to and it seems that perhaps vegas has a problem with xvids vfw decoder and not divx's since divx can decode basline xvid content but it seems weird to me. Perhaps vegas is trying to simultaneously decode the clips with both xvid and divx at the same time. Does uninstalling divx and having only xvid installed help?

Thanks for the suggestion. Any other suggestions? Right now I uninstall xvid to edit xvid in vegas, and install it when I'm going to encode with it. How troublesome... :|

Configure divx to decode the files instead of Xvid.

I'm not worried about playback because divx decodes Xvid videos just fine, but what I am worried about is encoding into Xvid when I use things like Vdub to compress it into Xvid. I would like to do that without having to download the Xvid MPEG4 Video Codec package.. Anyways, thanks for the suggestion though.

Um... I don't quite understand... if you want to encode to xvid then just install xvid. If you don't want xvid to decode the videos then simply configure divx to decode them.

If I install xvid, xvid files don't work in Vegas, I need to uninstall it to get it to work unless I'm going to change the 4CC, witch can be a pain in the ass. But if you configure divx to decode the files, then you dont have to change the fourcc or anything...

Depends if Vegas uses dshow or VfW for decoding.

My advice would be to not use codecs like XviD in NLE type packages. XviD really isn't designed for that kind of editing and they generally aren't designed to work with codecs like XviD.

The reason why DivX works is I think because they have implimented work arounds.

I used Naruto episodes 134 and 135 in Xvid format to test it out and it turned out better quality than most Naruto AMVs that use fansubs. I only spent ten minutes on it, but it was mainly a test. I had to uninstall the XviD video codec pack to make the Xvids work in Vegas, then I exported it to Huffyuv in Vegas, then re-installed the Xvid codec pack, then I opened the file in Vdub, set the compression settings to Xvid, then exported again. I would like to be able to use xvid in Vegas, AND still be able to export without having to uninstall, and then reinstall the xvid codec pack since that is what's causing Xvid to not work in Vegas.

You can use ffdshow to encode xvid files. I dunno if the quality is the same as with the xvid vfw codec though.
