Hi im new to all this dvd backing up. I use dvd decrypter, dvd shrink or DVDX Platinum to back up my dvds. The problem im having is the movies start then just stop when playing on my sons Xbox and when i play on my dvd player on my TV the movies will work great then in the middle of the movie it will start skipping then freeze up. ive backed up about 30 of my movies and they all seem to do it. The media i used is Generic "4X" DVD-R. my dvd burner was listed in the Generic DVD Compatibility Table. The DVD Burner i use is the Asus DRW1604-P with the newest firmware update . I even tried few movies on other ppls dvd players and same thing was happening, they would screw up in the middle of the movie... Computer specs if you need it is 2.40 GHz and 1 gig of ram. 120gig HD running windows XP Pro SP2 with all the updates current. please if you could help me. thank you in advance.

Lee
PS I used the dvd identifier i saw in another post and this is what it said if it helps.

I am not a expert on DVDs yet, but what your describing used to happen to me when making music CDs...granted they arent the same thing, not even close, but the problem then was caused because I would ruin the buffer while tryiing to burn things because I would do things in the background while the CDs were trying to burn. Not saying this is your problem, but Im wondering if you are? I would think though that with 30 DVDs tried (btw ever thought of buying a DVD-RW instead of just blowing more money on DVD-R's?..from experience its cheaper)...Hopefully someone else will give you some assistance.

hi thanks for the info. Yes when i decrypt and burn the cds the buffer thing runs on its own. how would i turn the buffer off? I as gonna buy DVD -rw but my dvd player dont play those types of Media ( so it says in the manual hehe ) I ran one of the copied movies on the burner and it seemed to work fine without any mess ups.

When burning with the generic media, try a low burn speed. I used some crap 4X discs that burned and played perfectly fine at 2X, but not 4X. If you shop around, you should be able to find 8X media at a decent price if you buy 50 at a time - my last spindle of 8X only cost 20 cents a disc.

I agree with CWR03. Record at half the rated speed. If 4x then record at 2x.

I use 8x media an burn at 4x with good results. Another thing is the least little smudge on the disc will cause it to freeze, and skip. Keep it clean. The Original pressed disc seem to handle the little scratches and small smudges better than a burned disc.

BTW the media that you indicated is a good brand. Taiyo Yuden is known as one of the more problem free media types available. If it was properly stored and not setting in 150 degree warehouse for months on end. In that case any media will have problems.:)

Well i went up to best buy and bought some TDK 8X and burned a movie and all seems to work good. So now what to do with a 100 blank dvd-r hehe

Have a party and use them as Coasters:D

You might want to run those TDK through the DVD Identifier and verify the manufacturer so you can try to get the same type next time since they seem to work for you.

I have some TDK that are made by TY Yuden and some that are made by CMC Magnetics.
The CMC Mag. seem to be the more prevalent of the two, however.
Both are 8x BTW.

Just another thought for everyone.

So now what to do with a 100 blank dvd-r

When first starting out in DVD burning, it is always a good idea to buy smaller quantities of blank DVD media
until you are sure your burner likes them.

That will save you money in the long run.

I believe most people starting out have experienced a certain make of blank DVD that just would not perform as expected.:(

Again, try to Identify the manufacturer of the DVD's that work for you because, as I have said , some name brand companies like TDK etc. use various manufacturers.:)

It's not what I think about them, it is if you have any issues with them.

In other words, it's what works for you.
The next person that posts about them may have issues with them with their setup.

So, if they seem to work o.k. then you know at least one type that will work for you.

I have experimented with different makes and know which will and will not work with my setup. You should do the same, just buy smaller quantities.:)

I will say that what I like, and have had no problem with personally, are... see below

8x Ritek GO5
8x Taiyo Yuden
8x MCC 003
8x CMC Magnetics EO1
8x CMC Magnetics AE1

8x Prodisc (Doesn't work for me reliably. Although some others have no problem with them).

Regards,;)

P.S. I burn @ 4x
