Here's an interesting article about how the graphic subsystem will evolve with the next M$ Windows version:
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=136813
Read it carefully, expecially the "Update 11"...

I guess people wanting to rip copies of the music and videos they own to other formats will just go to their linux partition. Unless the windows/bios integration makes it hard to find a mobo that will let you run linux...?

- Note to myself...
- Keep Windows XP forever
- Buy a PS3 to play future games

Is it just me or are 99% of Longhorn's advantages / features pure bloat³?
For ex.:
Advantages of Longhorn above XP:
- every window in Longhorn will be a 3D surface (when opening My Computer you're actually watching an interactive 3D texture)
For what? Will it make things any faster?
- applications can be bigger than graphic card memory currently allows
Huh?
- split your monitor into four pieces and play games at the same time while listening to music with Winamp, watching a movie with Media Player and posting BS on Guru3d.com
Oh yes I play games while posting and watching a movie on my 17".. even on 21" this is not really an advantage - unless you have 6 hands and as much input devices.
- Longhorn supports up to 160 windows open at the same time
- four different graphic modes for Longhorn (2GB/256MB/128MB/64MB textures)
Ah finally I'll be able to open 160 windows at the same time - what a relief
Longhorn uses a lot of memory, but it uses it for a very good reason. Longhorn actually doesn't even have loading times when you're using Explorer, Internet Explorer or any other Windows component. The big amount of memory thats being used isn't just for the textures but it contains every important file thats needed by Windows when running an application.
Right.. :sly:
In Longhorn icons will be completely changed. Documents don't have a icon anymore that shows the file-type, but it shows the first page of the document.
Since when did linux GUI's have that without the mega memory consumption they're targetting?
The whole Security point (ie files being checked the moment they arrive on your hdd) looks like total overkill to me aswell. They're again not trying to eliminate the problem (people downloading and opening everything that cries "FREE!!") but again make people depend on the 'ever-working' anti-virus software.
I'm all for advancements but most of this sounds like SuperMegaBloatWare and totally unneeded.
Oh and this one made my day :D
There also will be newer soundcards to support the incredibly high sound quality that is possible when Longhorn is released.

Yeah, my favorite "feature" is this one...
You are able to rotate your windows in a 3D way, so you can push it to the background, put it upside down or squeeze it in a corner...

Even at WinHEC most developers were less than enthusiastic about tne new "security" features.. I guess they realized that it isn't so much about security than about locking users out. But that has been Hollywood's goal ever since recording devices have been invented. Universal vs. Sony and the failed DIVX system are just two prominent examples.
I kinda hope HD is released real soon so software makers will have to target current operating systems that don't have the entire DRM architecture in place yet. Although, Longhorn won't be enough.. the next step is iris scans and fingerprints to play back a movie. The customer maybe king, but only in his bathroom.. every other place of the house will be under control of Emperor RMB (RIAA/MPAA/BSA).

Welcome to the futur: BS. Longhorn is something that will never get on my WS, as well as StarForce protected games.
Recommendation:
* Keep XP (SP1-2) or get Linux (http://distrowatch.com/)
* Get a PS3 or a PSP (or a DS with linux! :D).

and what makes you think a Playstation is any less evil? It's also DRM'ed to hell. Sony is doing everyting in their power to keep you from messing with the PSP OS, they even plan to force OS upgrades on you with games (not that this is anything unheard of.. MS does the same with the Xbox and DRM for their media player).

Every console are protected in their own way, but protected games don't end up screwing your console (like starforce do). Computers are ment to be versatile on hardware side and software side, where the end user can choose what to have and use, as opposed to console. M$ making it more "restrective" and "protected" is a very bad move IMO. I don,t want my PC to be M$ "console".

Yep. But for a WS, I'd like something more "easy to install" since I'm lazy and I don't need extreme performance. I'm getting Ubuntu compiled 64bit. Sorry for the linux OT :(
