Whats the best app to use to convert an uncompressed avi to mpeg2??? Pref free!!!

What are your goals for mpeg-2?

I have been doing a similar thing myself in the last few months, I have lots of different kinds of videos which I aim to put onto DVDs, so therefore I look at encoding to MPEG-2 suitable for DVD authoring, is this what you want to do? Because I have limited space on my DVD-Rs of about 4.3GBs I have to take into account what Bit-rate I might allocate for the audio and video streams - and what format for the audio (AC3 or Wave) and so their target file sizes are constrained.
So the choice of what is most suitable for your needs depends on how you will be using your mpeg-2 video, and you could provide some specs of your input file. From what I understand different mpeg-2 encoders perform differently quality-wise at different bit-rates.

All I'm saying is, give some more details of your query and ask for advice rather than just asking "what's best?" :o

I will also be looking at the answers because it is something I am doing myself :)

Apologies for the 'Whats Best' question!

I have captured some cine film to uncompressed avi. Once it has been 'filtered' within VDub, a 3 minute avi is nearly 6gb!!

As its 'Cine' it hardly has a fantastic PQ! Converting the same clip to Mpeg2 changed the file size to 133Mb!!

It will eventually find itself onto DVD because I will pass it around to family members.

I have taken the avi's into VideoStudio and output to 'DVD MpeG'. I just wondered if their was a better alternative for conversion that would minimise artifacting.

My question should have read, What do you recommend??

Do the filtering with AviSynth and its external plugins. Feed that avs into your MPEG Encoder of choice (commercial solutions: TMPG / CCE, free: QuEnc / HC Enc etc.). That should speed up things (unless you apply very slow filters) and increase quality when used properly. By using AviSynth you can do the filtering while encoding - without having to save temporary files (Source -> AviSynth and its filters -> MPEG Encoder).
