View Full Version : Simultaneous things affecting Ripping ?!
Debian

Greetings all,
the subject may be unclear and therefore I'll try to explain what my question is.
It may sound stupid but I really want to find this out.
If while Ripping with, let's say AutoGordianKnot one starts playing Winamp (or any other audio player) or a movie that requires the same very codecs (or any other codecs for that matter) used while ripping (no matter the player used, BSPlayer, Media Player Classic etc..), does this affect the quality of the RIP ?
Do the two processes interfere in any way ?
Simply put, can one play a movie/Mp3 while Ripping without affecting the quality/time of the rip ?
I'm asking this because I find it rather frustrating for one to wait for 3:30 hours to 4:xx hours (at least on my machine even tho' I've heard people pretending they managed to find a way to fasten the process to max 2 hours) in order for some RIP to finish so he can start playing some music/video.
Thank you for your attention,
-

The quality will not be affected - the worst problem I've ever encountered is that a movie won't play properly while an encode is in session. The length of time it takes to encode will always be affected by other processes running, as any computer has finite resources.

Nice of you to come here and call people liars within the same post in which you asked for help. Good thing it takes me eight hours for a typical movie, otherwise I'd be insulted. (I could do it in 2 hours if I wanted, but it would involve a loss of quality.)

1) You can use your PC while coding with no harm (it may be sluggish)
2) Possibly encode overnight.
3) Alot of factors effect speed of encoding from CPU to Filters.
You will find that your encodes that take more time than other apps
that cut corners will look nicer in the end. :)
Ps. Welcome to the forum

I WISH it took 4 hours, as stated above I choose quality over quantity and it usally takes me 8-12 hours for a single encode.

CWR03, I sure do appreciate you taking the time answering my question and since it's not my intention to offend anyone on this Forum (or any other Forum for that matter) I'd suggest you'd be a little bit more reserved when making assumptions on one's supposedly ill statements.
As I refuse to comment upon your malicious accusations I'd like to add that I was referring to a person I know in real life that owns a computer far less "skilled" than mine and since he likes to brag alot I assumed he lied but I suppose your proved me wrong, 2h RIP is possible even tho' you didn't mention the configuration.
Thank you Koti for your answers as for the pleasant welcome.
Since I'm a total newbie with this the only tool I use for Ripping is AutoGordianKnot v1.25 , ocassionally with Smart Ripper.
I also dislike cutting off quality but unfortunately I'm not sure I'm doing a good job increasing it, I usually make 1 file = 2 CD @ 80 quality @ rest of the options go default and by now the fastest RIP with a :
[5/10/2005 12:30:24 AM] Expected quality of first pass size: 90.12
was 3:24h.
I hope to find out more tho' about Ripping even with the cost of 1/3 of the day ;)

Can you please mention your computer configuration ? As in detail as possible ? (+ the software used for it)

Sure on the specs:
AMD Athlon 2600 XP
512 PC 3200 Ram
ATI 9700 Pro
2x 80gig Maxtor 7200 HDs (not yet striped, but soon)
Chaintech 7JVL6 Mobo
-TMPGEnc 2.5 Plus is what I use to do all of my encoding, as HC gives me a error anytime I try to run it (I think Hank is looking into this for me)

My apologies on the assumption that you were referring to other forum members regarding what was said about encode time.
A quick note on RAID-striping drives: from an article I read in some computer magzine (I can find it and scan it) the increase in speed is negligible, and the drawbacks can outwegh the benefits. After running a few tests of my own I've found that I achieve best speeds when I rip the DVD to one drive, then select a different drive for the encode. It seems that the ability to read the data from one drive and simultaneously write to another was most beneficial.
