This thread is a general appeal to the community and a bit of fun as well.

I am sure I am not the only obsessive collector out there and I am also sure that I am not the only "storage space challenged" one either. Yesterday I just ran out of shelf space for my DVD collection. That's not to mention all my audio CD's, Data CD's, Game Cd's etc etc.

I am drowning in these 12cm discy things!

So this a general appeal to everyone on ideas. What storage strategies are you using? Any cool storage devices or gadgets you know of or are using? Anything that provides an efficient storage system plus a good catalogue and search system would be good.

Secondly, I am interested in finding out where I stand in this collection stuff. See the attached Poll - maybe we can do an award!

I use a standard bookcase (Ikea's Billy series (http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=9&productId=51761&langId=-22&parentCats=10104*10173*10514)) with two added shelves + extra top unit which gives me 9 76 cm shelves for DVD's. And it is filled up already :(

I give up on the boxes and just use folders, much more portable.

Two 400 disc cases, in alphbetical order, both 75% ish full to leave space for easy additions.

Cost me £12 for the two cases so cheap too :)

i'm up to about 230 discs. not all mine, obviously. my collection is around 50 i would guess - mostly anime, not surprisingly. the rest is 90% hollywood crap that i wouldn't touch with a 10 foot clown pole.

My music CDs are all in the basement of my parent's house (they have more space than I).
I have them all as mp3s, so I can still listen to them conveniently.
The other stuff like data backups and DVDs are becoming problematic and I'm still thinking about how I want to store all the discs...

Some of the discs are in portfolios, some are in plastic CD boxes, some are in jewel cases - but the jewel cases take too much room, I have to change that soon.

A friend of mine stores his 300-400 DVDs in a shelf-system with wooden boxes (from Ikea). You can fit about 30 discs in slim cases into one box and slide the box into the shelf. It really doesn't take much room, it's not expensive and it looks good. I think I'm going for that as well.

I've got over 300 movies on DVD-R, but get this: my dad has got over 800! I showed him how to use dvdshrink last year and he's been ripping every day since. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you're retired - heh. The old man has got 'em all catalogued with DVD Profiler and actually prints out the covers and puts them in a real DVD box. I don't have time for that; I just stack 'em up on another spindle for a rainy day.

For my part, less than 20 DVDs.

Currently, I count my hard disk: 4*160go + 1*200go.

4-500

I use the floor, TV series on one corner, new stuff in front of the player, old stuff in the other corners....

Works for me.
