Hello,
I'm newbie in MPEG2/DVD and want to seek advise.
I got a Canopus ADVC-1394 and capture with Media Player Classic (720x480) HuffYUV + WAV format.
I got a large number of VHS and need to convert them to DVD. Since the VHS are precious I want to filter out the noise with VirtualDub first. As I know VirtualDub can't process MPEG2, should I use VirtualDubMod instead?
Can anybody kindly suggest the simple flow of making DVD-Video Disc? There's too much programs out there and confuse me too much.
Thanks in advance.
Rgds,
Johnson Lam.

You could try vdubmod or use avisynth and one of the available filters.
I'd use VirtualDub with your chosen filters in place as a frame server to the Main Concept Mpeg encoder (or CCE) and then use the mpeg in DVDLab to author the DVD !
cheers

Thanks.
Do you have any idea about the DVD authoring software?

Thanks for your suggestion.
But DVDLab cost US99 and I want to minimize the cost.

The dvdlab demo is fully functional for 30 days, so if you author quickly ;). Most burners come with some basic authoring software normally.

I got 600 VHS, so I'm waiting for Athlon64-x2, otherwise filtering process is too slow.
30 days surely not enough for me, but anyway thanks for advise :)

If you are capturing to AVI you can use virtualdubmod directly. If you are capturing to Mpeg use dgindex to create a d2v file and use an avisyngth script with all of your commands in it.
I then use quenc to create a m2v file from the avisynth script, and muxman to author the dvd. You can also use dvdauthorgui. All software is available for download on this website.
For NTSC dvd you need a 29.97fps video at 720x480. For pal it needs to be 25fps at 720x572 (Not exactly sure of the height). I would keep bitrate to about 3-4k in quenc.
This works great for me.

Thank you very much Abond, influenza and nnigam. I'll try and see if I can handle it or need more advise :)

word of warning: don't overfilter the VHS stuff. you'll be kicking yourself later otherwise... mpeg-2 can take a fair bit of noise, so only filter to make it look nicer - correct the colours and bleed and stuff (if you can), but try not to hit it with the noise filters too hard.
btw, if you only want the video to play and aren't worried about chapters and stuff, QuEnc will do a very basic DVD author.

Really annoying that none OpenSource program can create a VOB easily.
