HC Encoder or QuEnc for low bitrate

which would give the best results for backing up TV show DVD's where you need to encode down to about 53 percent, QuEnc or HC Encoder? I'm getting good results with HC Encoder, just wondering if QuEnc would do better

I have not had that much experience with either. So, I can't give you my opinion (at this time). However, it may come down to one's subjective opinion. Hope you get more direction than I am giving you.:)

Test also FreeEnc. I liked very much it's result with Peter Cheat template and 3 pass vbr mode.

Well, I will give you what info I have as something to go on is better than nothing to go on.

HC default setting is "Normal" if you are using in DVD-RB. There is a "Best" setting among other features that is available in the Pro version. This setting gives the wellll...best end result. And with you going down to 53 percent I would use the "Best" settings available and not worry about the time to encode. (Plug for DVD-RB PRO version):).

One problem I have seen is HC over shoots the TargetSectors more so than QuEnc. In other words, the output is to large. It is off more in the normal setting and a bit closer to where it should be in the best setting, for me.

The settings for the very best from QuEnc is with "High Quality, Scene Detection and Trellis ticked. It is very hard to discern much difference between HC and QuEnc at this time for me, but I don't go down below 3000Mbs very often. QuEnc is faster than HC IMO in most settings Except with the Trellis ticked (Trellis adds quite a bit of time to a project but I do see a difference with(better) and (good)without it).

Unless some kind soul has a link to a previous test or more personal experiences to share and to Help you, that is about all I can say on the subject.:)

FWIW, "53%" doesn't give the whole picture. some episodic DVDs will cram far, far more than they should on 1 DVD. then even with the best (not that we're allowed to discuss "best") codec, a 53% reduction will utterly destroy the video no matter how carefully it's done.

however, for a ~4-6 episode-to-DVD5 rip, i recommend QuEnc. just beware that the bitrate will probably spike unless you give it a comparitively low max rate (like 7000 kbps or something).

I have to say: Take HC Encoder because it's very quick in the best profile and do a great job. In my tests the quality is in some pics better then QuEnc and FreeEnc without spikes over the max bitrate. And HC Encoder beats even the MPEG-1 function in very low bitrates. Today, I`ve tested this and I was possitivly surprised.:)

But like some other. You have to test by yourself!;)

It’s really a hard job do decide, what encoder does the best job. You have to make a lot of subjective and objective tests to find it out. May be the following software

well, the decision is easy I guess, with QuEnc I get colored blocks that flash through my picture every few minutes. I get this with 2 different versions of QuEnc. Other than that picture quality is the same for HC and QuEnc. This is a serious problem with QuEnc, I think QuEnc needs some work. It looks like I'll stick with HC Encoder

I am very glad to see other people stepping up to the plate to offer you some assistance.

To many times on many boards people offer no help at all and only tell you to do a search.:(

This board IMO is here to help, direct, and offer suggestions for problem resolution.

Sometimes a person may ask a question in a manner that might be forbidden by the rules.

However, that act does not necessitate a flippant and gauche response.:(

(Like your Mother taught you) If you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all.

Suggestions and I repeat suggestions can be made that will help and assist the individual in problem resolution without breaking the rules. Lets all just try to get along and be helpful to each other.:)
