indeed, you can extract subs from .mp4 with mp4box
of course when you extract to .srt you will loose all the funky animation and color stuff, which might be set in the ttxt stream

funky animations in ttxt streams? How can I set funky animations in them? I always create srt with subrip and simply -add them. I think I missed something :(

hum, i didnt clean the yamb thread so that it gets messed up with issues not belonging there again...
-> split

of course timed text is far more powerful than .srt (which is propably one of the most basic sub formats, allowing as good as none modification of the text)

to author ttxt, you can convert a .srt file to .ttxt with mp4box and than edit the file as you wish
whats all possible is described here (http://gpac.sourceforge.net/auth_text.php)
