What is nero smart encoding

When burning avi to dvd with nero you get the option to use smart encoding, what is it and how does it affect playback on standalone dvd players. Anybody?

If Smart Encoding is enabled and Nero sees that a file is DVD compliant it won't try to reencode the file before burning, but if Smart Encoding is disabled Nero will reencode the file regardless. If you have hints enabled and mouse over the Smart Encoding option it pretty much says what it's purpose is.
