CCE and nos of passes

I have a question about CCE multipass vbr encode.

If I want to recompress a DVD to fit 4.7GB (4.35 GB), and the movie is pretty long (think LOTR EE), the bitrate gets very low, maybe under 2500... Or I want to put multiple movies on a DVD+R...

Will I get better video if I use many passes? I read that something between 4-6 passes is enough, but what's the difference between a 6-pass encode and a 12-pass encode? I understand that the quality won't look twice as good, as this's impossible, but will there be any difference at all?

Also, theoretically, how would a 6-pass compare to a 50-pass encode?

The idea behind more then two passes, is in short, to take a little from here where it might not be needed and put it over here where it MIGHT look better. It's not a magic wheel that the more you turn it the better it gets, the enocoder can magicaly pull bits out of nothing. CCE gets ALL the info it need to encode the video in the first pass (.vaf pass) and applies it in the second pass.. it simple (well maybe not real simple) math... the 1st pass gives the encoder the info it need and then distribute the bits to where they are needed on the 2nd.... the 3rd, 4th, 5th and so on are really just 2nd and 3rd guesses and not every guess is going to be better... In some test 6 or 7 passes look worst then 2 or 3.

Hey, you can do as many passes as you want but it not always the best... I do 2 passes on just about everything and for something long (like LOTR)... 3 passes wouldn't hurt

I usually use two passes unless it's a high action video to allow better distribution of the bitrate.

Which is the interest to propose as many "passes" if it are not used for nothing?

But like it's been said, don't expect improvements beyond 2-3 passes.
