I am having trouble converting ripped dvd files to avi. The project i am working on involves inserting deleted scenes back into the main movie so i need the ripped files in avi format so that i can use virtualdub to append the scenes. I have tried DVD2AVI but the converted avi files are just a mess. When asked what i would like to save the files in i get mpeg4, divx, no compression etc..and mpeg4 is repeated 4 times in the list.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I've used Fairuse a few times and it seems to do a good job converting dvd to avi. The free version limits you to a 700mg file size.

I used to use AutoGK, but have switched to Dr.DivX for most.
If I need to filter, I still use virtualdubmod.

Why not use a good mpeg file cutter/merger to put your scenes back in. This way you wouldn't have to re-encode.
or, cut the files where you want your insert and add them in the proper order in your dvd authoring software.
