A nice small freeware GUI tool that allows you to inspect mp4 file structures, supports ISO media file format and its MP4 and AVC extensions. Check it out. Download: www.miravid.com

I have tested it under Linux(Debian) with wine. It works, but the window can't be resized. An other thing i found is that only files with mp4 extention can be seen and selectet. But you write that it support also other ISO base File Format based formats. Is it possebile to at a "*.*" selector for the open dialog.

As evryone can create a own format based on "the ISO base Format" there are every extention posseble. I know of:
JPEG 2000 .mj2 .mjp2
MPEG4 .mp4 .m4a .m4v .avc
3GPP .3gp
3GPP2 .3g2
And will you do the changes?
.m4v is only used for raw mpeg-4 part2 video streams not stored in the .mp4 container
never heard or seen a ".avc" file
