Audio Line In

I have purchased a USB video capture device and it requires 256 Memory, and Audio Line In. I do not have an audio line in socket. Is there a device which will let me plug in an adaptor to create this on my laptop. Also in system properties in My Computer's properties it is showing 192Mb but the System Information list is showing 256. Will this cause the problems of stopping and hanging during capture?

Your laptop's motherboard has a built-in soundcard. Sometimes, the mic-in / line-in are shared plugs, for space reasons. Look at your laptop owner's manual.

To set that socket to line-in for recording, open your volume control applet and select File....Recording Options. You'll see both a mic-in and a line-in. Your soundcard driver will let you select one or the other.

If you *don't* have a line-in along with a mic-in, then return your USB device, since you won't be able to to use it with that laptop.

EDIT: And the "missing" 64MB is probably shared memory for your built-in video card.

I tried to change the setting for the mic jack. This Toshiba notebook will not allow me to change it. I went into the Volume applet in the bottom right tray and tried as you said, but it would only let me adjust volume, not any settings. I double clicked, right clicked and single clicked, but none of the menus or options allowed the change from mic to line in.

I went to Speech in the control panel and tried it from there as the help file said, but it only had one tab and that was to set the computer's voice. It was set to "Sam", so after I played around with that, getting him to swear and say stupid things, I decided that there was no way to alter the setting.

I thought that there would be a way around it though. Can I buy an external sound card with audio line in which will plug into a spare USB port?
