AVI to MPEG

Can anyone tell me which program to use to convert AVI file to MPEG. Thanking you all in advance.

MPEG what? MPEG-1? MPEG-2? MPEG-4?

MPEG2 or 4. Need to convert this AVI to some form of MPEG so that I can use Catamaran to cut out bits that I don't need. Thanks again.

What is your end product going to be? If all you really want to do is cut out bits, why not use virtualdub or some other avi editor?

Do as echooff stated and cut out the parts while in avi format. Then convert to mpeg 1/2 if you want. Virtualdub is an excellent and free tool for working with avi files.

Thanks to echooff and tigerman8u. Used virtualdub to edit the AVI files and than converted to MPEG2. Burnt a SuperVCD from the MPEG2 and now I have a very happy family member, whose birthday video I was trying to edit.
