View Full Version : DVD-RB 0.90 Pro treating audio/subtitles differently?

I am just (finally) doing backups of my Lord of the Rings Extended Editions. Spent a lot of time polishing up the source so that only minimal "compression" needs to be done (MenuShrink, etc.)

However, I just noticed something new. Normally, I first use DVD Shrink to strip out audio titles I don't want, but I leave the subtitles alone because it's not worth it for the space savings.

I've always done it like this, but I notice when I give RB the source dir it shows the VTS's and pretty much every audio stream and subtitle stream is "selected" (i.e. in "keep" mode). At first I thought it was a bug but that was just the way RB worked. So if I had stripped out AC3 2-ch French in DVD-Shrink, in RB's interface it would show up as if it was a "keeper" but the final output was just fine obviously.

But today I noticed, when setting up the project, that the audio tracks I had stripped out in DVD Shrink now actually LOOK stripped in DVD-RB. For example, I took out tracks: 2 (DTS 6-ch English), 3 (AC3 2-ch French), 5 (AC3 2-ch English), 6 (AC3 2-ch English). But I left in track 1 (AC3 6-ch English), and 4 and 7 (AC3 2-ch English).

Now RB shows checkmarks only beside the tracks that still exist -- the removed tracks are now referred to as "unreferenced" language and are UNchecked/unselected.

Maybe this is the way it should have been all along. But is this a new feature? And is it just cosmetic in the interface, or will it change the output? I don't want it to completely take out all references to the streams, i.e. to renumber them and so forth. But I like it how (in the past) any removed streams will show up in PowerDVD (right click, audio languages) but in Grey and therefore unselectable. Will this change that?

Also, I noticed that even though I removed no subtitles, MANY of the subpictures have been deleted (at the bottom of the list). These are listed as "unreferenced" or "unknown" (can't remember which). Is this a new thing, too -- or has RB always been removing (unchecking) wonky subpicture streams? (maybe these streams are never referenced anywhere? I would hate to lose forced subtitles or anything like that)

Would really appreciate just a quick note from jdobbs to tell me that all is well and it's just an interface thing (or if not, to explain the difference between removing something in DVD Shrink vs. DVD-RB).

Thanks!

I just recently added that feature, mainly for this very reason. Often preprocessing packages remove a stream, but leave it listed in the header section of the IFO. There are also DVDs that fill the tables showing 7 audio streams and 32 subpicture streams even if only one or two are used.

I put this in to clarify that even though they are listed in the header, they may not be in use ("unreferenced") by the PGCs.

It still works the same way as always, it just gives you more detail in the presentation now. I think the "checked" selection was causing a lot of confusion for some folks. I got several questions as to why tracks were missing in the output that were never truly there to begin with.

as long as you are playing with these, any way to add a DC to the attribute field if there is a director commentary flag?

Sure. I just added it, it will be in v0.91.

Just to carry on the theme of showing more details, would it be possible to show the size of the available audio tracks in the same way you do for each vts?

Thanks.

No. That can't be done until after a scan. The size shown int the VTS listbox includes video/audio/subpictures combined.

No problem, thanks for the explanation.

How about whether a subtitle is forced or not?

Ok -- if it's forced you get "(F)", and I also added "(DC)" if the subtitle is directors comments (same as audio).

Here's another one... can you put a "C" for subtitles classified as "Children"?
