real bitrate: ???? kbps

Let's talk about 720X576 video ( a dvd video)

i usually create divx videos and i know that a 1,200kbps stream (and 160 VBR mp3) is a good one.

Is it the same thing by Real encoder?

i tested FilmShrink and i didn't know which bitrate i had to choose.

Is there any bitrate-calculator program to use or something similar if you want a good quality?

I have many doubts about "real bitrate". can you help me?

12) Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!
Bitrate calculator works with filesize. What filesize do you want? Also, what is the source?

i will try to be more specific

i have a dvd video 720X576 ( a movie, not a n anime) and i am not interested in .rm size but in "quality".

So now let's talk about 90-100% quality without size limits.


I tested FilmShrink: i encoded a little 6 minutes video (a dvd cut, a 300Mb .vob) and setting 100% quality i obtained a 160Mb .rm, perfect in quality (bitrate had been automatically set veeeeery high because i set a 700Mb size limit also if the video couldn't be bigger than 300Mb hehehe).


So perfetc quality and veeeeeery high "encoding" bitrate.

This is my problem (and question). A veeeery high encoding bitate doesn't mean that the .rm file HAS that bitrate but only that the encoder can use every bitrate but no more than that max value.

using divx encoding a good bitrate is usually more than 900kbps or about 1,200kbps if it is an action movie (with 128 vbr mp3). you can choose also a very high bitrate (example: 4,000kbps) but usually the encoder will create a lower stream because it will not need so much kbps.

so the question is a phylosophic question.

Is there a "tipical" kbps bitrate to encode a 720X576 action movie by rm encoder?

"tipical"= bitrate to change a little if the movie is an action one or not, as the "900-1,200kbps divx tipical bitrate"

YES. i know it seems a stupid question.

i need to know if there is a xxxkbps value that is ridicoluous to go below it thinking to create a "enough-good" rm movie.
(as using 300kbps divx: no one would choose this value to encode a divx movie to create a "good" divx movie).




So this is my question:

I'm talking about "quality"

audio mp3 files

128bitrate enough good
160 good
192 better

and so on...


divx movie 720X576 action movie, 90-100% quality
------------------------------------------------
900kbps usually it's almost good
1200kbps good

and so on...

where ???= what? (in your opinion and experience)

I usualy aim for 1400MB for HQ movies (~2h), or 700MB for MQ movies (~2h).

Audio: Surround (2.0) HE-AAC @ 64kbps (En, En + Fr)
Video: DVD Rez (anamorphic) (700-1000kbps)

Also, 90-100% quality "can't be calculated" the way you do., since 90% quality for your taste may be 60% quality for mine.

But, testing it yourself is the best way :)

the 1000 kbps vbr audience is a good start, 2000kbps is great, and the 5000 is overkill and most systems cannot play that high of bitrate, so you decide.

Most GUIs doesn't use audiences. Also, RealProducer 10 is not ment for DVD backup.

I usually use bits/pixel (after cropping and inverse telecine). It's a little more complex to calculate. A tool like AutoRV10, which is targeted for DVD backups, does it for you automatically when you enter your target filesize. For high quality anamorphic DVDs, I try to stay above 0.2 bits/pixel. Low motion, perhaps 0.175, really high complexity, perhaps 0.225.

If RealProducer were not ment for DVD backup:

1. It would not read .VOB files (my all time favorite feature)
2. It would not have VBR audiences

Is there any utility to make this calculus easily? a stand-alone utility, not the Autorv10 "inside" one.

Anyway, you are to do what you want, but keep in mind that what you use is by far from the optimal. I'm sure every encoder here will agree. I strongly suggess you have a look at AutoRV10.

2. My point is VBR is for encoding local media, not remote streaming. This adds to the reason it is designed to encode movies.
3. Let's think about that, HDTV IS DVD, minus the disc. (..D stands for disc)

producer allow you to open file using Dshow why do you think the software will refuse to read your Vob file, it accept dshow input after if you don't have the correct dshow filter or if the quality is not correct or if the dshow filter crash it's none a producer problem but it's just logical the user give him a correct input.

Ps : on a side not perhaps you should made a search on avisynth use, because using directly dshow input could in some case give you audio desynch or lower quality (due to post processing) or slowdown encoding (du to some useless color space conversion).

Ps2 : Dvd => digital versatil disc / HDTV => High Definition TeleVision.

you can read your vob using avisynth but i'm not sure it's a good idea...else you demux audio tracks before and make video-only encoding via avs....

but you will have to mux audio-video after (avs can't choose audio track i think...)

NB : i know about dvd2avi (or dgindex if you prefer) but sometimes you can't make a correct avs with it..i know i have this problem with a homemade dvd video (hollidays) : the video has many default but no problem with the source :-(
but there's only one audio track so i use avs and directshowsource on the vob...:-)

Whatever, I stopped encoding for awhile, lost the point somewhere...takes too long and not enough space curently to surve any sort of purpose. In order for me to get more episodes of, say CSI, on a CD than a DVD I would have to encode, regardless of the GUI or settings, at a quality unacceptable to me.

Why do you recompress if you don't want "smaller size"? Quality could be lots better if you would use an "updated" softwares and learn from the other members.
