Using 0.89 Pro and well I get a long black screen for a while before the menu starts. Ths culprit seems to be VIDEO_TS.VOB and Vobblanker doesnt want to blank that. How can this be fixed? Is this some new kind of copy protection?

this is addressed in the updates, however, it was included in .89
basically rebuilder was undoing some of dvd decrypters structure protection
- Modified code so that proper structure will be
created whether or not DVD Decrypter's "Remove
Structure Protection" is selected. Because
DVD-RB made corrections itself, in previous
versions using a source for which Decrypter
had also removed structure protection would in
effect reverse itself and cause long blanks at
title start.
are you sure you reprepared in 0.89?

Yeah I read that but it was still there after rebuilder was complete with it. The original VOB size on the DVD was ~660MB and after DD was done with it it was still that size. And then after DVDRB was done it was still that same size.

Turn structure protection off in DVD Decrypter and see if that fixes it. Please post what you find so I can tell what's up. I did this movie last week in ISO mode with no problems at all.

Ok tried it again and still the VIDEO_TS.VOB is around 600MB.

VIDEO_TS.VOB is a menu vob, therefore only copied to the output folder by DVD-RB. Not re-encoded or modified in any way. The size of it will never change. I'm not sure what your problem could be, as I have also backed up the same disc in the last couple of weeks with no problems. I did mine in file mode, so the mode doesn't seem to be the key.

The problem is most of that space is taken up by black video. Theres no way the menu could be 600MB.
w00t3r,
perhaps the menu is in several languages? Menues can sometimes
be really large especially when they are flashy and then take a lot of space.
Take a look into it in IfoEdit, there you easily can remove unwanted
Language Units with Menu or Vob Extras. :)

You do know that in VOBBlanker that if you double click on the VIDEO_TS.VOB (or single click to select it and click the menu button) that it'll bring you to the menu dialog and then if you click on a row in the top grid that it populates the lower grid and that allows you to blank individual menu PGCs, right?
I've always been able to get rid of those black videos on other discs from that menu PGC dialog, though I don't have this particular movie yet...

If you are up for it, load the disc in PgcEdit and start playback in "trace" mode. As you go, you will be given detailed information about the cell being played back. If you compare the original to the processed, you might learn what caused the change in behavior. Otherwise, you can at least note where all the black video is stored and remove that cell(s) with VobBlanker.
While menu blanking and Menu Language Units (LU) are on the table, keep in mind that if there are multiple LUs, you can reuse the cells from your primary language for the others.
