Blue Laser Writers

Would anyone have any info in regards to when the Blue laser writers and the media for same will be available, and if there claims of 25GB+ per disc are realalistic, also they claim to still be able to read the standard Red laser media, and can anyone forsee any problems if compressing this form of media, or any info of problems, in the development of said type of writer or media.

Have you heard lately of Sony (Blu-Ray) and Toshiba (HD-DVD) might join forces to come up with a next-generation DVD standard? This is to hopefully avoid another DVD format war.

I think when these new disks do arrive, maybe they should encase them similar to say a floppy to protect them from being handled and scratched.

Yeah, it's kinda a good idea and a bad idea at the same time though.

Good:
- Protects discs as you said, and that's a very good point. Blockbuster will certainly like the idea!

Bad:
- Backwards compatibility - CDs/DVDs may need to be put in caddies to play on new format hardware
- Will be more complicated, therefore the discs will be more expensive, harder to produce, there'll be mechanical parts to go wrong, and they'll be bigger

Some CD drives started like that, idea has been forgotten.

If backward compatibility is an issue, then the discs need to be usable without covers. I've seen pictures of these discs in use; Blu-Ray seems to have a protective cover, and HD-DVD does not.

Blu-Ray is a quantum leap, but HD-DVD is an extrapolation from the current base: it uses the same disc structire used by the DVDs.

To remain current on the issue (or any other issues of interest to users of these fora), one has only to read Doom9's newssheets regularly.

Not only, would be more easy to have a double side disk too.

Rather than doing double-sided, they're going with more layers. That way you don't have to flip the disc or require two optical assemblies.

If they add more data layers, at the same time keeping the disc thickness about the same, won't the disc be more vulnarable to I/O issues due to scratches?

Well, double layer and double side then...

To flip a disc is the same as inserting another, i dont understand the difficulties to have two optical readers, dvd players are cheap...
