View Full Version : Adjust bitrate : RB-Opt or DVD Rebuilder Pro

Hello,
I have been using DVD Rebuilder (associated with CCE) for some months.
I am very happy with this software.
Now, I want to adjust some settings when I reencode a movie.
I use DVD Remake with DVD Rebuilder to cut unwanted trailers, extra's and so on.
But now, I want to go a step further, to have the highestt bitrate
for the movie.
So, I want to reduce the bitrate of credits at the end of the movie, in order to improve the bitrate on others parts of the movie.
I found that it was possible to make this adjustement with RB-Opt.
I use the latest version 0.17 beta.
So, my first question is : (the latest version of RB-Opt was released in September 2004) . Is this version compatible with the latest version of DVD Rebuilder 0.85 Freeware and with the latest version of CCE 2.70.02 ?
Maybe there were some changes introduced with the latest version of DVD Rebuilder concerning the paramaters found in REBUILDER.INF.
I don't know... Maybe somebody can answer... ;-)
Second question : Is possible to change the bitrate of cells (or segments) directly in DVD Rebuilder Pro ? In this case, I would donate some money to have DVD Rebuilder Pro, so I can avoid the use of RB-Opt. It would be cool to have this feature, it woudl be a lot easier !
Thanks for your reply !

as far as directly reducing bitrate, no
but you can slideshow, etc.. the credits directly.
as for donating, donating might get the feature (as it helps development) (hint hint)
I would love to directly import a bitrate also in the segment viewer, just type xxxx for bitrate to set it, for example.
also, the latest cce is mad buggy, most ppl have much better success wtih 2.50 or 2.67

Thank you Carpo & JPTheripper
Well, "slideshowing" is an option... not the best :(
Could you tell me what are the features available
in the segment viewer ?
Thanks

Hi scummi32,
You can blank segments or turn them into a "slide show". I haven't tried the slideshow yet, but the preview seems to shoot for every I-frame, I think. So, the preview looks pretty fast for a slideshow, but it should save quite a bit of space, while keeping audio and something to look at. The segments of the main VTS can be operated upon, though editing in the main VTS is achieved by explicitly checking an option each time the segment editor is opened. It's very handy!
I used RBOpt pretty regularly, once upon a time. I don't think it knows about the various scale changes (quality_prec, vbrbias, et al) with 2.70 SP, so If you try to change the CCE options with rbopt, your values might be written with the assumtion that you are using a different version of CCE. !Maybe! I'm not sure about this, but like you said, it hasn't been updated for a while.
Another issue I ran into when trying to tweak the credits was the lack of control within a VOBID. It didn't appear possible to adjust the bitrate of a single cell within a VOBID. Probably for good reason. Again, I could be completely wrong, but it seemed to work that way.
@Carpo
I have been meaning to check out QMatOp, but VobBlanker and PGCEdit have gotten so powerful lately, that I haven't needed to reencode as many discs to back them up.

I've been looking at bitrate allocation in the segment viewer/editor. Not sure when/how I might implement it.

I'm glad to hear that. That's up there with menu processing on my wish list.

I'm also glad to hear that...
It would be so cool and usefull !
I think that I will donate some money to help the developement of DVD Rebuilder...
Bugs are always fixeed quickly and the money will not only contribute to JDOBBS, but for the whole community !

I'm not sure about this, but like you said, it hasn't been updated for a while. I tried RB-OPT and it seemed to work well in that department. The only "issues" I noticed were that it duplicated some cce lines with no negative impact. And if I blanked some cells on DVD-RB, RB-OPT doesn't detect it and would include those cells (which would be given avg. bitrate of 500kbps by DVD-RB) on the calculation of atributing new bitrate unless you you locked them (not very easy to locate them).
@jdobbs
Maybe robot1 could help you structuring/implementing the bitrate allocation, he's done a pretty good job on that on every possibilty (by cell, vts, linked vob-id's).

I also agree that adjusting bitrate would be a great addition. It works great using RB-Opt to adjust bitrate, but it would be nice to have it integrated so one click mode could still be used.
Another addition (if technically possible) I would like to see in the Pro version, is the abilty to tell DVD-RB not to re-encode a segment, but just do a copy, much like how angles are proccesed now. For example, if DVD-RB splits a movie into 20 segments and 2 of the segments are high action and the other 18 are rather calm, you could specify not to encode the 2 high action scenes to preserve the quality.

jdobbs said he thought this was a good idea, and eluded recently to adding it as an option to the segment editor.

Jdobbs decided to elude it ???

jdobbs said he thought this was a good idea, and recently mentioned the idea of adding it as an option to the segment editor.
I think he meant alluded instead of eluded. Easy to make that mistake when you're writing in stream-of-conscience mode.
