Greetings,

I am using DVD2SVCD 1.2.2 Build 3 to convert DVD movie from disc to VCD, and also using TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress.

During the process of ripping, I received the last error in the log:

- Encoding D:\WinFast WorkArea\TitlePicture.bmp.avs
Bitrate: 1150.00
Executing TMPGEnc. Commandline:
"C:\Program Files\Pegasys Inc\TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress\TMPGEnc3XP.exe" "D:\WinFast WorkArea\TMPGEnc_Project_file.tpr" /Encode /Close

and the pop up msg stated:
This file is not a project file generated by TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress

Pls advise on how to use DVD2SVCD 1.2.2 Build 3 with TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress.

TIA

Nick

TMPGEnc Express is not a supported product.
The freeware TMPGEnc betas and the TMPGEnc Plus range of encoders are supported.

For TMPGEnc 2.524 at http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html
Revision History
Version : 2.524. 2004/12/16
Changed: The formats for the project file and the template file have been changed. Therefore, project created with the new version cannot be used with older versions.

It stated above that the project file and the template file have been changed, can this 2.524 version be used with DVD2SVCD 1.2.2 Build 3?

If cannot be used, pls advise on a compatible version. I can't seems to find the download page for the earlier versions.

I don't know for sure if that will work then.
All I can advise is you try it.
It says new project files cannot be used with older versions.
It does not say that the reverse is true, ie it doesn't say the new version won't recognise old project files.

Give it a go and see.

If all else fails, get QuEnc - it's free and does about as good a job IMHO.

Tested TMPGEnc 2.524 with DVD2SVCD 1.2.2 Build 3. Works OK with no error in log.

There is one caveat:

The video_ts on the PAL DVD disc has an aspect ratio of 4:3, after the conversion with DVD2SVCD 1.2.2 Build 3 and TMPGEnc 2.524 to the bin and cue files and burning to PAL VCD disc , and upon checking with GSpot v2.52B01, the AVSEQ01.DAT file has an aspect ratio of 16:9.

I can see large top and bottom black borders as the AVSEQ01.DAT is being played on the Windows Media Player. Though the video_ts on the DVD played to full screen with no significant black borders (just a tiny bit of black border at the top).

Qns:
1) How come the conversion doesn't retain the aspect ratio 4:3 but instead converted it to aspect ratio 16:9?

2) Is it because of the 16:9 aspect ratio that I see those top and bottom black borders?

3) Can I keep the aspect ratio of 4:3 by following Nick's suggestion of "Launch DVD2SVCD and for your AVI conversions, choose one of the NoSideBorders resizers in the Framserver tab." at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=90930?

4) With ref to Qn3, which of the below 3 options should I choose:
a) [AVISYNTH_BilinearResize_nosideborders]
b) [AVISYNTH_LanczosResize_nosideborders]
c) [AVISYNTH_BicubicResize_nosideborders]
My present configuration at the Frameserver Tab:
Avisynth Command
AddBorders[BorderLeft,BorderTop,BorderRight,BorderBottom] - there is a triangular arrow pointing to this option.

Nick

1) It shouldn't have. Are you absolutely sure you did not select 16:9 in the Aspect Ratio dropdown box in the conversion tab?

2) yes

3) No. MPEG files have an aspect ratio flag. This means that whatever the resolution of the file, the output is displayed as per the flag. In other terms, take a DVD. A 4:3 PAL DVD has resolution of 720x576. A 16:9 PAL DVD also has a resolution of 720x576. The difference is a flag in the stream which instructs the player on how to display the output. If GSpot detects this as a 16:9 stream, the flag must be set.

4) N/A

EDIT - The logfile DVD2SVCD_log.txt should show the settings you used. If you are unsure, copy and paste the contents of the logfile into a reply to this thread.

There are some (not usual) badly authored DVDs. That is, IFO says a different AR than the one inside the MPEG-video. Players are obliged to follow what IFO says, and I've never seen one doing a different thing.

But, IIRC, the automatic AR recognition done by DVD2SVCD (and its corresponding defaulted selection in the AR box) uses the MPEG-video AR and not the IFO AR.

As a consequence, in these "rare" and badly authored DVDs, the defaulted selection is not the right one.

In any case, as Nick says, the log file is required to know what is happening.

I redid the conversion and verified that the aspect ratio dropdown box was indeed 4:3 (No borders, encoded as 4:3). I do not know why in the process of conversion, it again changed to aspect ratio 16:9 like in my earlier conversion attempt.

Appended is the DVD2SVD_log.txt for the earlier conversion attempt. I can't seems to find the aspect ratio setting in the log.

Well, the script is correct. No borderrs are added.
So the only thing I can imagine is that TMPGEnc is adding borders and changing the AR...

Open manually TMPGEnc, load the project TMPGEnc_Project_file.tpr and see the preview. Does it have borders?

If yes, review carefully TMPGEnc settings. Sorry, I do not have your TMPGEnc version, so I cannot check it.

I think this could be an issue with the changed project file format in the new version.

Perhaps the new version is not correctly picking up the AR info from the project file created by DVD2SVCD.

I think it might be time to give QuEnc a try...

No Borders.

Tried QuEnc MPEG Encoder v0.59 BETA 4, there is error and conversion cannot be completed. Do I need to do any manual settings on QuEnc? Appended is the DVD2SVD_log.txt.

You're done.

Seems I've reproduced the problem.
I've fixed it changing "VBV Buffer Size" in Encoder tab to 64. Loading the project file manually TMPGEnc complains about 112 (default). It says:

"For MPEG-1, 1150 kbit/s, 25 fps it must be in the range of 8KB to 102 KB (64 KB recommended)".

BTW, it is a error I've never seen before (but I never do VCDs).

The TMPGEnc that I downloaded is japanese version. Can you give a step by step instructions so that the DVD2SVCD conversion can proceed smoothly without the AR problem?

Sorry, may be I didn't explain myself: The problem I've reproduced is the last one, Executing RunbbMPEG. Commandline:
"C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\bbMPEG\RunbbMPEG.exe" "D:\WinFast WorkArea\TitlePicture.bmp.mpg"
File not found The system cannot find the file specified

To fix it:

First, download the English patch, link is in the same German page pointed by Nick
Second, copy the patch tmpg_en0918_Ver12a.exe to your TMPGENc installation folder:
D:\CD\DVD2SVCD\TMPGEnc-0.11.20.98-rel1_Ver12a\
Double-click on tmpg_en0918_Ver12a.exe and patch your encoder, so you will be able to understand what the encoder says
Start DVD2VCD and go to encoder tab.
Change (in DVD2VCD) the VBV Buffer Size to 64

Done.

Did the steps in your instructions. DVD2VCD went through the conversion smoothly with no error. Upon checking the Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_PAL.mpv file with GSpot v2.52B01, the AR of 16:9 still persists.

OK, I've downloaded GSpot 2.52B01 and, yes, it says 16:9, but seems it is wrong.

Open your mpv or mpg file in an hex editor. Look for the MPEG start sequence 00 00 01 B3. After the start sequence, write down the following four bytes. They should be (in Hex):

16 01 20 23

Which means (from left to right)

160: Horizontal size (352 in decimal)
120: Vertical size: (288 in decimal)
2: Aspect ratio (2 means 4:3 and 3 means 16:9) <-- Not true!!, only in MPEG-2, see next post
3: Frame rate (3 means 25 fps; 2 means 24 fps,; 4 means 29,97 and 5 means 30 fps)

jsoto

EDIT: You can use dvdpatcher (look into doom9 download section) to patch your mpeg and convert (only patch the AR flag, not really convert) it from/to 16_9 or 4_3. I had never used dvdpatcher in an MPEG-1 video, but after a quick test seems it works fine. BTW, it identifies correctly 4_3 in my sample (where GSpot says 16_9)

jsoto

Errr, I've to correct myself. I was wrong...

According to http://www.mpucoder.com/DVD/mpeghdrs.html The meaning of AR nibble in MPEG-1 is different from MPEG-2
In MPEG-2
AR means DAR (2 means 4_3 and 3 measn 16_9)
But in MPEG-1
AR means PAR and the right values should be 8 for 4:3 (PAL) and 12 for 4_3 NTSC

So the four bytes following the MPEG start sequence should be:
16 01 20 83

Looking in TMPGEnc project, generated by dvd2svcd, yes, it is wrong! In Video Settings I have DAR 1:1 (VGA) instead of PAL 4:3...Changing to PAL 4:3, the generated file has the right value (8) in AR mpeg header

I'll do some additional tests and I'll post back

jsoto.
PS: Forget dvdpatcher, it only understands MPEG-2 DARs.

jsoto

Well, selecting Anamorphic in AR of conversion tab, Video settings configuration AR in TMPGEnc is correct (16_9 PAL), but the other two possibilities, 4:3 encoded as 4:3 or 16_9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3) are wrong. In both cases TMPGEnc shows 1:1 VGA in Video settings

So, I believe something has changed in TMPGENc project file or this is a bug in DVD2SVCD...

Nick, could you confirm it?.

I can confirm this finding, Jsoto. However, even so, the mpv file still plays fine in my software DVD player at the correct AR in all cases.

Same here, encoded VCD plays fine, and also bbmpeg.mpg file in PowerDVD and WinDVD

However, in Windows Media player 10 and bsplayer, the mpg file is shown something like 16:9 AR

I believe SW players assume 4_3 in a VCD (this is the only AR supported by the VCD standard). Similar to DVDs, where players must trust the IFOs instead the mpeg header

I've repeated the test with my old TMPGEnc version and same results.

I've made a lot of VCD in my past days using TMPGenc of all versions, both directly and via DVD2SVCD and I've never seen the VBV Buffer size be anything other than 40. Even purchased commercially pressed VCD's have 40 as the VBV Buffer size. The VCD Templates for TMPGEnc when loaded also default to 40. Selecting the VCD option in DVD2SVCD automatically selects 40 as default also, so I fail to understand why a setting of something other than 40 is there, unless its been manually changed.

Have you also considered that Windows Media Player may have a bug playing MPEG-1 streams rather than DVD2SVCD ? WMP has always been unreliable in the past (well, for me) and I have always recomended to use WinDVD/PowerDVD/etc for playback of MPEG1 streams.

VBV Buffer:
I didn't test any other version than 1.2.2b3, and this one defaults to the value stored in VCD.ini, under DVD2SVCD installation folder. In my tests, the value in this ini file has been defaulted to 112 after a fresh installation.
BTW, I've checked with my old version of TMPGEnc and it doesn't complain about 112 in MPEG-1
In any case, I do not know which ones are the legit values neither which one is the best one.

Windows Media Player:
Yes, I agree WMP was unreliable also for me. But what is crystal clear is that the wrong value generated in MPEG file (23 instead of 83) is due the fact of the wrong setting in TMPGEnc project file created by DVD2SVCD.

I also have D2S v 1.2.2b3 installed and in the VCD.INI file VBV buffer defaults to 40 as it has done for many versions before. It was only in the intial versions of D2S that supported makeing VCD that had a VBV of 112 (unaltered from that used for DVD's). So I'm not sure whats happening there.

As for what is the correct setting/number, well TMPGenc from ver 12a to very latest uses 40 when you load in their VideoCD template, both PAL or NTSC. DVD2SVCD defaults to 40 (well the last few versions have) and all the commercial VCD's I've ever checked have 40. Just did a test with MainConcept MPEG encoder, guess what, 40 (Bitrate Viewer always reports all these as 20 however.) So I'm staying with 40 :D

It been a while since I have made any VCD's so just ran a small 16:9 PAL avi through D2S. I selected VCD as output, D2S auto set the VBV to 40, encoder to TMPGenc (ver 2.524.63.181), etc. I chose aspect ratio as "16:9(borders added encode as 4:3)" I changed nothing else and ran. The resultant *.mpv file plays 4:3 (with picture 16:9 and borders top & bottom) exactly as I expected with WMP v9 and WinDVD v6.

I also just did a small VOB file 4:3 PAL to VCD. Changed nothing, selected for aspect ratio "4:3 ( No borders, encode as 4:3)" and again the resultant *.mpv file plays 4:3 as expected in WMP v9 and WinDVD v6. Checking the 4 bytes after the 4 byte start sequence, I get:

16 01 20 23

I dont see any bug in D2S for me ;)

- I've configured the default to 40.
- Deinstalled D2S, and remove completely the DVD2SVCD folder
- Installed again, ane the results are:
DVD.ini: defaulted to 0 (automatic)
SDVD.ini: defaulted to 0 (automatic)
VCD.ini: defaulted to 112.

Did you really reinstall completely your D2S?.

A) "16:9(borders added encode as 4:3)" and "4:3 ( No borders, encode as 4:3)" are the same in terms of output AR. It should be 4:3

B) Believe me, 16 01 20 23 is clearly wrong. It should be 16 01 20 83.

C) WMP v9, yes, I've checked it and it is also wrong, shows 4:3 AR. WMP v10 seems to be OK (at least in this point).

Please load your TMPGEnc_Project_file.tpr project manually in TMPGENc and look into Configure (Video tab) and check the Aspect Ratio checkbox. The right value is 4:3 PAL and you should have 1:1 (VGA), because D2S is setting it wrongly. Change to 4:3 PAL and you will get 16 01 20 83 as output. Probably nothing will change in WMP v9 neither in WinDVD, but now, your output will be fully correct.

I've always installed any new version of D2S over the top of the older one without uninstalling first. The HD that D2S is installed on has not been formatted for years :D Maybe it hasnt been over-writing the INI files, who knows. Maybe I also manually changed the ini file to 40 years ago and can't remember doing so

I just did another quick VCD run and while TMPGEnc is actually encoding you just click on the Settings button and it shows (of course it cant be altered) VGA 1:1 aspect ratio. Same for both DVD and AVI to VCD.

I find it strange that if this is really a bug in D2S thats shown its ugly head now (precious would have to be one of the last few surviving DVD to VCD makers on the planet!) Considering this would have to be the first instance reported of a VCD made by D2S w/TMPGEnc displaying at an incorect 16:9 and that there would have to have been literally Millions of VCD's made this way, I really doubt this is a problem. I have made many 100's of VCD's in the past and all have been played on many different DVD/VCD/PSX Players flawlessly at 4:3 as well as PC's with many different software programs.

Theoretically you may be correct, practically it makes no differenc.

precious would have to be one of the last few surviving DVD to VCD makers on the planet. You're right, but may be some others (like myself) are using DVD2VCD to encode DVD extras using a very low rate

you may be correct, practically it makes no differenc.I agree, no difference at all in the most of the players.
