ok...here it goes, this is a long story. I have been using the TDK - R DVDs for quite a while now.I have had very good luck with them for playback on the computer and 2 of my Sony DVD players. These disks do not play properly on my Dad's DVD player. He is using a Go Video combo machine that I bought him a couple of years ago. So I felt that it was time to update his machine and went looking for a new player for him. Like I said I have 2 Sony's one is a 5 disc changer that is about 3 years old and the other is a 725p that is a year and a half. Went and bought him the Sony 575p. Got the error message on the screen and disc would not play. I tried a different movie on the TDK discs, same thing. So I took the player back and tried to do more research on the web. I decided to take a TDK - R disc with my backed up movie on it and tried to play it on 2 other Sony DVD players at CC. Same error. Tried a Panasonic and the disc was being read by the player. Of course they did not have any in stock. Tried the Zenith model and disc started playing. I bought that model and took it to my Dad's house. Started watching a movie and the movie skipped and audio was messed up. This movieplays flawlessly on my players. Took it back and the guy at CC had a SOny 725P open box like mine for $40 so I bought that. Now I was really thinking that all the movies I have made I wont be able to view if my DVD players crap out. Time to change my media. Bought the Philips DVD + R spindle. Guy at CC told me to try them and if i ended up making a few coasters he would still return them for me. That was cool I thought. Why dont any of the new Sonys play these disks? I am using DVD shrink and Nero to burn. ANy input from anyone? Is anyone else using these TDK -R and if so, what machines are you using them on?

In my book it is because sony does not want you to play copied movies or anything like that because they own alot of movies. I for one never buy anything sony for that reason. I also buy only dvdplayers that say they will play cds and cdrws because they in most cases will play about any copied movie. All my dvd players are cheap apex from wal-mart they play movies I have copied without any problems.

Your post would be a lot easier if you made use of the carriage return and paragraphs. My headache today got a little bit worse trying to read through your message.
Anyway, I think a more likely cause for your problem could be that you didn't burn these movies in a 100% standard way, and the older Sony's were more forgiving than the new ones. I haven't heard anything about sony intentionally trying to screw up playback of dvd-r's.
What did you use to make these backups? What software and what burner?

I am using DVD Shrink 3.2 and burning with Nero 6. My burner is the OEM Dual layer. I looked at the info. under the device manager and it says TSST CD/DVDW TS-H552B. Using XP Home edition.

I have sinced burned several movies with the Philips DVD+R. I took a disc to CC and put it both the Sony's that I tried previously. the disc was recognized and began to play as if it was an original. I don't think that it is any error on my part when backing up my movies. I have lurked in many forums and I know that I am doing it the correct way. Whether it is my burner or not remains to be unknown.

I would be interersted if anyone else is using the TDK -R and what their success is.

And for any of you that got headaches from reading my original post, I double spaced for easier reading this time. :D

Did some research and found out that this is a Samsung drive. I will check my backed up DVD for errors using the Nero DVD speed test or maybe DVDinfopro. I really dont think that it is a CRC read error. Any suggestions?

I burned some TDK DVD+R and -R @8x using Shrink & Nero (Also DVD-RB) and I had problems with skipping, freezing on playback. Dropped the burn speed to 4x and it cleared up.

TDK uses several DVD manufactuers for their disks. I bought some TDK that were TY @ Best Buy. Don't see that very often as they have mostly been CMC lately as verified by "DVD identifier".
Quickest way to determine the make is if it is Made in Japan is Ty, if made in Taiwan is CMC Magnetics. Drop your burn speed to 4x it can't hurt and might help.

P.S. The Phillips disks that I last bought were also CMC Magnetics, same as the TDK. My standalone players are lowend APEX models.

edit: Memorex, for instance uses every manufactuer under the sun. I have seen Prodisc ugh!, CMC o.k., Ritek good, all stamped as Memorex. Know who makes your disks, very important:)
