View Full Version : 0.88 Pro, Quant Matrix = Encoder Default, prepare uses a custom matrix

<edit: problem seems to be with RB Opt 0.17 and its interaction with newer versions of DVD-RB>

Using 0.88 Pro, I just ran a prepare on Disc 2 of the extended Fellowship of the Ring.

Avg. bitrate will be around 3700-ish. In the advanced settings in DVD-RB, I of course have Quant Matrix set to Encoder Default for main feature. For "Low Bitrate Matrix" I have it set to Low Bitrate, for Very low Bitrate Matrix I have it set to Very Low Bitrate. Extras = same as main feature.

Anyway, after running prepare on disc 2, and loading the REBUILDER.ECL, I notice that every single segment has a qmat (custom) inserted there. I ran a prepare on disc 1 of this film, avg. bitrate around 4800, and in that case, everything was standard in the ECL file except for one segment that had a custom matrix.

Now I understand that maybe some segments may somehow dip below 3 Mbps which would require the Low Bitrate Matrix to be substituted in, but I don't know why, with an avg. bitrate of 3700 or so, that custom matrix would be used in EVERY segment.

Anyone have a clue?

Well, this is strange and bizarre.

I just figured out that that custom matrix was being inserted only when I used RB Opt 0.17 to increase TargetSectors. Basically:

the original .ecl file has the last segment in VTS 1 with a bitrate under 3000, so DVD-RB passed on the custom "Low Bitrate" matrix to it. But pretty much all other segments are qmat_idx=0, standard.

Now all I do is go to Global Options in RB Opt and tweak the TargetSectors up a little bit, and save settings. But now in the rebuilder.ecl file, it looks like EVERY segment is having that specific custom matrix inserted.

This must definitely be a bug with RB Opt, no?

How do I change TargetSectors permanently, by the way? I couldn't find a setting for it in rebuilder.ini.

Since this behaviour did not occur with Disc 1, I investigated a bit more (looking at the rebuilder.ecl.original files).

In Disc 1, the last segment of VTS1 has an avg. bitrate of 4600 or so, so it used the encoder standard (qmat_idx=0).

In Disc 2, the last segment of VTS1 had an avg. bitrate of 2600 or so, so it was below 3000 and used the custom matrix (DVD-RB's "Low Bitrate").

It seems that if you hit "Save Settings" in RB Opt, even if you've just increased TargetSectors and nothing else, it applies whatever matrix is associated with the LAST segment in a titleset to ALL the segments in the titleset.

I think Robot1 confirmed that under "CCE Settings" the matrix that is displayed is the matrix for the last segment in the set. So perhaps doing any "Save Settings" applies that matrix to all the segments in the set.

I realize RB Opt was written before DVD-RB added per-segment matrices (not just per-VTS), so this can't be thought of as a bug I guess, just a totally unexpected "feature."

Thought I should get the word out before anyone else scratches their head about this.

RB-Opt uses for all the segments in a VobID the same matrix (the one which is showed - the matrix of the last segment), as it was written before jdobbs added per-segment matrices.
In next version it will be fixed (I hope to have some spare time this week).

Right. So the routine re-copies the matrix of the last segment in the vobid to all the other segments in the same vobid?

It sort of makes sense. Hope you have some time to look into things soon -- I really love RBOpt and now with QMatOpt I think I'll pretty much have all the dream tools to make my backups as great as they can be.

Although the number of tools I use are staggering:

DVD Decrypter
DVD Shrink
MenuShrink
DVD Remake Pro
DVD-RB
RBOpt
QMatOpt

wow. crazy.

Yes. It was designed this way.
