Just Noticed: Lemony Snickett's Series of Unfortunate Events- Copy Protection Warning

While at Toys 'r Us I was waiting for customer service and had time to kill. I picked up the Lemony Snickett's DVD to see a notice on the cover that states the disc is copy protected.

I hadn't seen anything about this, but I haven't been keeping tabs on copy protection either.

What is this, and has it been hacked yet?

Pretty much all studio disks have some form of copy protection on them. This particular one just has a notice on it, is all; you'll sometimes notice that there's a Macrovison label on some disks... they're just advertizing the name of the company that's responsible for creating their copy-protection scheme. If you use a good decrypter (such as DVD Decypter, which is regularly updated), you can most usually get around the copy protection on the disk.

I wasn't sure what they were talking about, I had guessed CSS or macrovision. But, that's the first time I've ever seen CSS called as a copy protection method. I know it is, but never seen it marketed as such.

With the tools available there are ways to circumvent all those methods, I wasn't sure if there was something new out there. I did head to blockbuster to rent the movie to check it out. Turns out decrypter didn't have a problem or at least didn't report a problem...
