Hi,
Can anyone give me any advice on how to backup my copy of starwars episode vi. I have tried several times but the final dvd is always around 7.2 GB!! considering the original is about 7.6 GB. The film contains multi angles/interleaving and this is flagged up when you rebuild but RB processes evrything and the output is always way to large. I know I have seen people with undersize problems but I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. This problem seems to also occur on the other episodic discs containg multi angles but not on the bonus disc which does not have any multiangles/interleaving.
I am using the pro version and have found the same problem with an earlier pro version 0.87 but haven't tried any other versions so far. I have been using both CCE 2.5 and HC encoder 0.14. Although the rebuilder program is on a primary drive (c) I am saving all data to a secondary drive (F). I am running xp with sp1
p4 2.4C (512K, 800 Mhz)@ 3.01 Ghz
1 Gb DDR
Any help would be appreciated

As far as I know DVD-RB hasn't supported multiangles and ILVU yet. jdobbs is going to change it in DVD-RB v1 at the latest :)

Hi Artoor,
But if you read the threads and forums it was implemented after 0.65 I think but people have still been having problems with it. It seems to work sometimes with some films and not with others.

You are right :) I read it and in fact it was implemented since v0.65... I had similar problem and jdobbs said... ehhh... what he said You'd like to read this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93457) below :)

ilvu and multi is there, but they are not reencoded. so if the ilvu parts are too big there is nothing that can currently be done.

also on star wars the menus are huge, i suggest hitting them with menuedit to get savings, then reencoding.

please post your high/low/typical bitrates from the oversized encode also

Thank You Artoor for the thread I didn't know that this was the case. This probably explains why I have an oversized file. Looks like I'll have to wait a while then before I can do this.
Thanks jptheripper also for your advice. The first bit of the praparation phase with the bitrates is as shown below
[10:22:17] Phase I, PREPARATION started.
- CCE SP ECLCCE encoder selected.
- VTS_01: 3,653,353 sectors.
-- ANGLE and/or INTERLEAVING is present.
-- Scanning and writing .D2V file
-- Processed 205,643 frames.
-- Building .AVS and .ECL files
- Reduction Level for DVD-5: 41.9%
- Overall Bitrate : 2,502Kbs
- Space for Video : 2,512,468KB
- HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 3,155/500/2,502 Kbs
I could use menuedit as suggested but my initial thought was just to get everything althought this would sacrifice film quality extras etc. I'm sure I could take out bits with menueditor but that will take some time. The alternative is a dual layer disc (don't really want to) but I like rebuilder out of all the dvdbackup solutions (thanks to djobbs and rockas)
looking at my bitrates you would think it should fit on even with the 41% reduction?
Any advice
Thanks

Well I also backuped my Star Wars Collection. I used voblanker to stripp the extras and than removed all languages except english with ifoedit. Afterwards I shrinked the dvdmenu with menushrink to still menus which gives free's up 600 mb on the final dvd. At the end I edit the menu buttons with menuedit and finally reencoded it with dvd-rebuilder.

It won't be long until DVD-RB Pro will reencode ILVU segments too. I will probably also introduce an option to remove them.

@jav7860

I don't think this is your problem. Star Wars Ep IV has ILVU, but it has been done by many people and it works fine. My guess is that you have the wrong encoder selected and the reason it is oversizing is that the encode is being done in CBR. If you are using CCE 2.50, make sure you've selected "CCE SP (v2.50)" under the "OPTIONS/CCE OPTIONS" menu.

Your posted LOG shows that it isn't one of the 100% ILVU discs that are an issue...

Many thanks to all for your help and advice. I was doing the encode using 3 pass and not cbr but I will check my settings and see what happens.
thanks all again much appreciated

Hmmm... I guess you missed the point of my post. :sly:

Of course you didn't have CBR selected. But different versions of CCE have different values to specify VBR. If you select the wrong version you will get CBR as a default because it was confused.

Thanks,
I did miss your point and I didn't know that. nice to know these things.
i will make sure I have everything correct before I proceed with the next encode. If I have any problems I know where to come.
Thanks jdobbs
