View Full Version : Getting aspect ratio right on standalone

I decided to try making a widescreen DVD for a change - I have been doing 4:3 content for a while but I wound up with some widescreen footage and figured I'd try my hand at encoding it.

I encoded the video at 720x480, 23.976FPS progressive using FreeEnc and selected the "16:9" aspect ratio. Then I set the pulldown flag on the resulting .m2v file using pulldown.exe and authored a dvd using DVDAuthorGUI.

As always, when played on my PC, it looks great. When looked at using DVD Decrypter's IFO mode stream processing, it shows "0xE0 - Video - 720x480 (NTSC) / 16:9".

But when viewed on my standalone player, the video is not letterboxed but is stretched vertically to fill the screen. So it is smooshy-looking.

What did I do wrong?

Set your DVD player to 4:3 letterbox, not 16:9.
