Hi, tried opening an ASF file to edit in the lastest version of Vdub. Didn't work. Read that I had to use VDub 1.3c and installed ASF codec as well. Tried to open up but this popped up : ASF: Illegal object fragment flags 0c in packet at b4 packet size = 1f40, pp = 14, send time: 0:00

any help would be great. Oh btw, the video properties stated it was a wmv file.

Dont use VirtualDub to edit or convert ASF files. The code for it was never finished and probably never will be, and thus results in troubles you have now.

Try ASFtools.

i just converted the asf file using ASF Tools. I tried to open the resulting AVI file with Virtual Dub 1.5.10 and this message popped up:

Couldn't locate the decompressor for format 'WMV3' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

I tried locating a VFW codec. Does Indeo Video Interactive work for this?

nope

try WMV9 VCM (google)

i could open the file with Vdub now, but all i see is a black screen instead of the video frames. The bar at the bottom left said there are some errors in the frames. They said i require a windows audio codec to play as well. Any idea?

for the audio codec, install divx 3.11... why your video wont decode properly i really wouldnt know... can you play the resulting AVI in WMP?

No Video after conversion to AVI.

This is usually a codec problem. In Converter window, check the field
"v.Comprsn.". If the value is "MP42" or "MP43", Installing proper
codec would solve the problem. On the other hand, it is not possible
to have a direct conversion if the value of "v.Comprsn." is WMV1 or
WMV2 The only codec (filter) that can decode this type of data is
released by Microsoft and it will not work if the data comes from an
AVI file.

As far as I know, there are no other compatible codec for this type of
data. The only way to convert this type of movies into any other
format is re-encoding. You can use Re-Encode tool to Change the codec
into MP43 and then you can convert the result into Avi.

check out asftools faq: http://www.geocities.com/myasftools/

vd14c asf doesnt works with not standard or damaged asf,
on the other side asftools doesnt support the direct conversion to avi(only re encoding)

Try to use asftools just to repair the asf, then load in vd asf.
sometimes simple reapring is sufficient, sometime you need advanced.

try tmpgenc too.

Now i ask a question, is there any tools to just change the asf header into an avi header?

Because i think that all the thing is this....

Asf to Avi converter is a tool to transfer data from an asf/wmv file
to an Avi file without re-compressing. The transfer process does not
deal with any coding or decoding of audio or video data. Therefore it
is not possible to select a new codec for AVI file.

sorry... it's from asf tools faq

basically it says that asf tools can do asf to avi for some wmv codec formats... i never tried asf to avi with asf tools though so i dont know exactly which ones (if any at all)

i think its for wmv codec formats that can be stored in avi ... (not restricted for use only in asf/wmv container) - true?

bye

MEncoder can do this for u(transmuxing),
or mkvmuxer(via graphedit, but muvmuxer may be out dated)

Wait, is a while that i dont use asftools, maybe it can change asf in avi, but not wmv in avi, only tmpg can...
