How are u doing DVD backup?

right now, with so many good codec choices (x264, ateme h264, divx, xvid, rv10, wmv9 for video, mp3,aac,ogg for audio, mp4,mkv,avi,ogm for container), right now, what do u guys use for dvd movies backup?

I use HC with dvd rebuild, or DVD shrink. but mainly HC that I make turn when I sleep

Sometimes is more interesting to try out diverse mothodes than read recepts. Or than sitting and watching Hollywood's uninventivity :D

Question is what you want? Just making backups, or maybe to learn something while...

I've done so many XviDs in .avi containers that the thought almost nauseates me. I sure wanna branch out to other possibilities and gather more knowledge. Like:

XviD in matroska
H264 and mp4

I'd sure be grateful for suggestions regarding proper tool-chains for these jobs.

Sorry for the misleading title of the thread, actually i was just curious what u all guys were using for dvd to mpeg-4 backup !

and ukb008, here are some of ur more options:

DivX Video + MP3 Audio = .avi container
DivX Video + MP3 Audio = .divx container (also supports .xsub subtitles)
XviD Video + MP3 Audio = .avi container
XviD Video + AAC Audio = .mp4 container
DivX Video + AAC Audio = .mp4 container
VP7 Video + MP3 Audio = .avi container
DivX or XviD + Ogg Audio = .ogm container
Any kinda Video + Any kinda audio = .matroska (supports srt and dvd subtittes too)
NeroDigital ASP/AVC + AAC Audio = .mp4 (with dvd subs)
then there are also rmvb for real and wmv for wm video formats!

i've made very few actual backups... most of what i've done has been tinkering. right now, everything i do ends up in mpeg-2 again.

but my mpeg-4 weapon of choice is xvid. followed closely by x264... when i get my new "e-penis" (thanks shinigami-sama for that one) i'll be using x264 a lot more i think, as my computer's too slow to play it back in realtime with directshow (mplayer is fast enough, but alas i'm still somewhat tied to directshow for now).

as far as tools used, it's basically just avisynth with some kooky scripts running - it's surprisingly difficult to come up with a simple, infallible solution for all video types, but i'm getting there (and when i get there, i'll post it).
