View Full Version : DVD -R plays on stand alone--not on PC

The DVD's play on stand alone players but about half of them do not play on the PC DVD recorder that was used to burn them. I am making identical copies of a DVD I authored -- as far as I know nothing is changed from copy to copy.

Using Taiyo Yuden disks, a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R5002, vaio 2.53 gig, 512 MB Memory.

DVD Decrypter does not recognize the disks but it does recognize those copies that are recognized by the PC recorder.

Using Power DVD.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what is going on? Thanks.

Do the discs work on other peoples PC based DVD drives?

are you saying that dvddecrypter cannot read the original disks, but it can read the DVD-Rs that you just burned?

have you ever cleaned you dvd drive?

lark & Axed,

All of the DVD's are recognized by other people's DVD players.

If the PC does not recognize a copied DVD then Decrypter does not recognize that DVD either.

I have not cleaned my DVD drive. The drive is 11 months old.

I just got back from testing the DVD's on my neighbor's new Dell PC. The DVD that does not play on my PC doesn't play on his PC. The DVD that plays on my PC also plays on his PC. Both DVD's play on his stand alone DVD player.

Is this really a cleaning problem?

i don't think so, especially if it doesn't work on your friend's pc either. could it be that the media is -hmm- not-so-good, but his stand alone is a super reader (or bad disks)?

have you tried copying them with another program? Nero or RecordNow etc?

The media he uses is the best on the market. It could be the burning program, try Nero or even DVD-Decrypter and see how they turn out.

Computer life is complicated!!

My original burn was by Sonics MyDVD from an AVI file. Got some bad burns. I then tried Roxio and got bad burns.

I just finished using DVD Decrypter. I tried two discs. One did not play on the PC and one played the first two parts and the computer hung up on the last segment.

No problems on the burn part but on the verify part I got error messages (see attachment) indicating bad sectors.

This is at the bottom of a batch of 50 Taiyo Yuden disks that I ordered from Rima.com. I'm beginning to think I've run into some bad discs.

Whats the media code on them? Look at the dye side near the transparent white hole in the centre. There should be a series of numbers that starts with "GD000".

Is it possible your DVD burner just doesnt like -R's also? You could try +R's instead.

That is hard to see. Numbers are: GD000272

Well the specs are that it is a -R.

But enough of this. In desperation I went to the Vaio (sony) web site and sure enough there was a firmware update for the Tosiba SD-R5002. I installed this and the first burn with Decrypter is ok. I really believe this was the problem all along. The device description changed from SD-R5002 1S30 to SD-R5002 1S33.

Quote from Toshiba's web site: "Information about SD-R5002 and SD-R6012 DVD-R/-RW Drives
Toshiba has detected a potential write error when writing to DVD-R discs using the follow Toshiba DVD-R/-RW drives, the SD-R5002 (for Desktop PCs) and the SD-R6012 (for Notebooks). The frequency of occurrence is very low, but can be corrected by updating the drive's firmware. "

Although my suspicion earlier that some of the discs were bad was further strengthened when the first disc I picked up from the pile (a new ? disc) was not recognized by Decrypter. Message: Unable to recover TOC).

Thanks for all your help and patience.
