so i have a ton of avi files (which in size only come to about 2 gb).
i want to convert them to DVD, but the programs im using convert them to several dvds....it seems like with being able to compress a dual layer 9gb dvd to fit on 1 dvd+r, i should be able to compress 2gb of avis to 1 dvd+r as well.....
any ideas?

Well, the programs you use probably have to increase the resolution of the AVIs in order to fit DVD standard - there you have one possible reason for that failure. Also you might have used quite strong compression when encoding the original AVIs (with MPEG-4?) already, and thus might not be able to get the material small enough with the comparably weak compression MPEG-2 has to offer. Also compression artefacts caused by this make re-compression to a sensible quality/filesize even harder. If you postprocess, denoise and smooth the input like hell you might be sucessful in the end. But it isn't worth it.
If you insist, you should use your encoding application's inbuilt deblocking, deringing and denoising (if available), the encoder at the highest-quality (slowest) mode, and use a custom matrix designed for producing low bitrates.

There are AVI to DVD guides in the Guides section of the main Doom9 site.
Give them a look.
