View Full Version : WMP Crashes upon opening any file

I've had this problem for months now, but never really bothered to ask about it. Simply put, Windows Media Player crashes once I open any file that *needs* WMP (embedded WMVs). AVIs seem fine, not that I use WMP for such things. :)

I've tried updating, reinstalling (I'm on WMP10), and shifting various settings around, but once a website loads WMP up in the browser, CRASH! (Note: The crash occurs on both FireFox and IE)

And it's not a browser thing either, as if a video stream happens to open WMP (I can usually get it to run in MPC, but just for factual reason, I'll list the symptom) outside a browser, it will crash too. WMVs that are downloaded to the HDD also crash it.

Why, may I ask? I've looked through various FAQs and googled time and time again for an answer.

I'm having a similar problem with WMP10. I don't use WMP usually, but sometimes it crashes Explorer windows when I use the icon display setting (I guess Explorer uses WMP to render a thumbnail from video clips).

I'm sorry I haven't found any solution, just so you know you're not the only one :)

Is Norton Antivirus running in the background?

No, AVG Antivirus

Could your codecs be corrupted? Did you install any of those cruddy codec packs? And, did you try a removal and reinstall of the MS Codec Pack ?

Nope, no codec packs here (don't trust them!)!

Simply FFDShow, XviD, x264, WMV9VCM, VP6, and CorePNG. All other codecs are default with Windows.

Did you try reinstalling your Microsoft Windows Media Codec Pack? Link here. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx)
