This machine used to encode and burn a dvd in just a few minutes...
lately it has taken to being very slow...
the read rate is under 2000 kb now...I thought my reader was at fault so I bought a new combo drive...no better..The burn time is excellent
it's just the encoding that sucks..

check your computer for parasites (aka spyware) like RealPlayer. Simple check is to open the task manager and look at what's running. More elaborate is to run spyware/virus sweepers.

Funny thing is, none of the checkers considers RealPlayer to be a bad program, but it runs hidden and chews up cpu.

I don't allow Real Player on my machines...after a thorough
cleaning I didn't see a difference...but I up-graded
the combo drives firm ware and it helped a lot...
go figure?

what's the manufacturer and models of your dvd burners. Most likely you bought a sony that is locked at CSS 2X read. Also make sure DMA is enabled.

yep I would have to agree with mrbass, when asking for info you should always tell us as mutch info about your computer as possible
i.e.(what kind of prossesor,motherboard,memory,hdd,dvd/cd rom,dvd burner, video card, operating system, and last but not least what kind of programs are you running for dvd back ups!!
