As you may know, the future HD DVD formats support 3 different video compression techniques. Now Warner has just announced they'll be using Microsoft's VC-1 for their HD DVD movies that should be released by the end of the year. On the other hand, the licensing problems (other companies have claimed to hold patents to technologies used in VC-1 and WMV-9 which could lead to Microsoft having to pay license fees themselves) are still unresolved, so you never know until the first discs will be released. (taken from Doom9's first page).

Is VC-1 the same thing as WMV9 HD? I've saw few WMV9 HD movies - they are ugly (if you'll compare with MPEG2 HD or XivD, VP6, AVC).

So, why Warner Brothers chose VC-1 for their HD movies?

Microsoft is in the process of working with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) to establish a new video codec specification. This specification does not currently have an official number and is referred to as VC1. VC1 has three distinct modes of operation, or profiles, that each support different features: simple profile, main profile, and advanced profile.

The Windows Media® Video 9 codec is Microsoft's implementation of both the simple profile and the main profile of VC1. The Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile codec is Microsoft's implementation of the advanced profile of VC1.
