I've read several guides but I'm a little confused.

What is the terminology used when I wanna convert the main movie from a DVD to a avi file, compress it via divx. No need for subtitles, just the movie. No need for chapters and all that. Is that called ripping?

If that's the case, would DVDdecrypter do the trick?
