Guys,

My first post so be gentle ;)

I've done a fair amount of searching and have learnt some important information but would love some help in the above mentioned area.

I have captured old cine film using my DV camcorder. With adjustment of the projection speed and fine tuning of the camcorder, I have minimal flicker and reasonable focus. Not great but close to adequate.

I have used Ulead Videostudio 8 to get the footage onto the PC with the huffy codec. Using Virtualdub I have started trying filter variations to 'restore' the film. To be honest I don't have a clue!!!

I have tried the deflicker filter to remove the remaining small amounts of flicker. Whilst it has done this, it seems to completely wash out the colours (I'm using default settings as I don't understand the difference, any help in this area appreciated!!).

Can you guys PLEASE give me ideas of what filters I should be using (pref in what order), I'm finding it all very confusing!!!

ALL help VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

Thanks in Advance
Stace

First a picture is worth a lot if you just could post one. You should be monitoring an analog signal from the DV camera. Does it look ok? What I do is capture to tape so I can try various captures settings to the PC.

MSU deflicker can cause a washout clip unless you change the settings.

I have not seen that problem with neuron2's defliker. However only flicker reduction can be obtained, not eliminated with these filters. You must have the right type of projector and camera, a camera where everthing can be done manually, most camcorders can't cut the mustard.

Fliters for restoration are "autolevels" "colormill 2.1" "hotspot"

Richard,

Thanks for the quick response. I have a video clip if you could let me know where to post it (smallest I have is 52mb). How can I post more than one image (the prints vary depending on film, the one attached is particularly bad).

The projector is a Prinz Magnon Duo (don't know the quality, it's my grandfathers! would be interested in your thoughts!!) The DV camcorder is a Panasonic NV-DS15 (Pal). I had the camcorder plugged into the TV to monitor its output so I captured as best as I could.

Flicker is pretty minimal (to my untrained eye) but would love to sort out the colours and possibly sharpen the whole image (its quite soft).

Thanks in advance for your help!
Stacy

By the way, where can I get the filters you have mentioned.

Guys,

Using the filters supplied by Richard (Many Thanks) I have got the footage to a state I am happy with.

Unfortunately, a 3min 9sec clip is over 5Gb!! What compression method on save should I use?? I guess as its Cine footage (and its far for great quality) compression won't hurt?!?!?!!?!

All help appreciated!
Thanks
