Mpegs And Avi

I am just getting the hang of this, but would like help to understand more about it. Question 1. Can you if you download a mpeg 2 or mpeg file copy this straight to a dvd-r disk and watch it on a everyday stanalone dvd player. Question 2. how can you tell what type of mpeg file it is
Question 3. Does it usually take hours to convert from avi to dvd files or am i doing something wrong.Why does some software when they say avi to dvd then convert from avi to an mpeg file, Am i missing something. Question 4. If you can't burn mpeg and mpeg 2. files straight to dvd what software is required to convert and finally what is this talk about 1 and 2 passes when recoding what is all this about. I know some of you will probably say search the forums, believe me i have but just can't understand so maybe if someone told me all the stuff at once i would get it. Thanks for any info :confused:

Q1 No
Q2 Right Click, Properties. Windows will tell you(MPEG files are registered). Most players. Virtual DubMod.
Q3 Yes. Usually for me it takes about 5 times the length of the video( 720*576@25fps). This is called encoding.
Q4 An authoring program, examples are Scenarist, Sony DVD Architect, and TMPG DVD Author. These will require DVD compliant mpeg files( TMPEGEnc will take care of that). Making a DVD is called authoring.
Q5 2 pass means the encoder will analyse the source video first then encode( takes about twice the time of one pass). Meant to increase quality without increasing file size by distributing the bit rate more efficiently.(IMO I don't see to much of an increase).

Thanks alot for the info i think i get the gist now the only thing i am still confused about is the avi to dvd concept i have done this and it only converts it to mpeg then i need to use a program called dvd santa to convert that to VIDEO_TS folder with all the vts files. Would that be right and is dvd santa a good program for doing this. Once again thanks
