VirtualCD (http://www.virtualcd-online.com/) is another possibility.
It allows creating images and moreover to compress them additionally.
I have lost contact to VirtualCD so i'm not sure if these images follow an open standard or if the application is free.
Concerning your Daemon problem try once to set another interface name for daemon driver (anything other resp. much more different than the default value) during the installation. Maybe that helps...

Microsoft (Yes) has one, but I never tried it (DT works fine on my system). It allows you to mount only ISO, I think.
here is the direct download link:

CloneCD also has a virtual drive, and I think you can DL it for free as a separate piece of software from SlySoft..

VCD is old and "propritary". The most universal is DaemonTools

This is what Slysoft says in their site:
Important Note!
Our products are sold as a "try-before-buy" software. You can try them 21 days for free, so you have enough time to check the program and its functions.
SlySoft Inc. doesn't refund your money if you are not satisfied with our products - so take your chance and test it out before you buy!
