Since DVD+R DL recordable discs are fairly new, I was wondering how long we could expect them to last before they start to get errors? I expect the first layer will probably last longer than the 2nd layer, which has to be burned deeper, therefore, I would guess the 2nd layer will be the first to cause reading errors as time goes by. The question is, how long can a recorded DVD+R DL disc last before the 2nd layer starts to give problems?

So long as they are good quality to begin with and you store them well (e.g. keep in reasonable temperatures and don't leave them out in the sun - recordable media is UV sensitive) and they are free of errors in the first place, they will last much longer than you or your grandchildren. Certainly, they will outlast the DVD technology.

I don't think the DVD technology will ever die because it's digital. Eventually we'll be able to simply copy DVDs onto hard drives, or whatever new digital storage device or memory card is created down the road someday.
