Can you join a split DVD-9?

If I use one of the guides to split a DVD-9 into two DVD-5s, can I later rip the two burned DVDs and join them into a single DVD-9 to be burned onto a DVD+R DL disc??

Don't stop searching. I've seen multiple ways to accomplish this task... although none as elegant as the way described with remake.
